What is 800 feet long and 30 feet off the ground? The zipline at Camp Northward!
The zipline will be the main attraction at the camp on Saturday, June 19, as Pendleton County experiences the Pendleton County Outdoor Palooza.
According to Nathan Derico, camp director, the zipline has been at Camp Northward since 2016, but it was upgraded about  two years ago. “The zipline was upgraded and lengthened in the spring of 2019, I think it was. It’s nicer than it was. We used to have a ladder to the ground.”
Now, the zipline leads to the ground, giving a full experience to anyone who wishes to give it a try.
The line will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during POP, and people can go as many times as they wish during that time as long as they re-queue in the line.
Derico mentioned some limits and caveats to the event.
Be aware that safety gear is available--there is no need to bring your own--but it is limited. Attendees will have to wait to suit up in the gear once all of it is in service.
The event has weight limitattions. Fifty pounds is the minimum, and 275 pounds is the maximum for the line.
Those who wish to zipline must wear closed-toed shoes in order to get in the line.
Participants need to wear knee-length shorts or longer.
Participants will be asked to sign a waiver before going on the zipline.
Derico wants to be clear that there is no charge for the event. It is part of POP, and his goal is to join with the county in allowing Pendleton County people and visitors to our area to experience a bit of what the camp has to offer.
The camp is located on Broadford Road, just south of Falmouth. Derico tells people searching for the venue to follow US 27 to Punkyville and Anderson’s Garage. Broadford Road is next to Anderson’s Garage, on the right as you drive south from Falmouth and on the left as you drive north. Camp Northward is two miles up Broadford Road on the right. There are signs at the front of the camp. Derico suggests that you go to the top of the hill and park next to the main building. This will require you to walk to the zipline, but it will eliminate congestion at the site.
