The Pendleton County Cemetery Board met with Judge/Executive David Fields in order to be sworn in, to review its purpose, policies, and by-laws, and to elect officers.
The bylaws state that  the board consist of three democratic and two republican members, and initially, two members  shall be appointed for one year, two for two years, and one for three years. Gary Barnard and Fran Carr were appointed for one year, Rick Brown and Bill Newman were appointed for two years, and Carolyn Reid was appointed for three years. Election of officers were as follows: Carolyn Reid, Chair; Rick Brown, Vice-chair; Gary Barnard, Secretary; and Fran Carr, Treasurer.
Upon Judge Fields’ suggestion, the committee agreed to change the regular venue from the Pendleton County Courthouse Committee Room to the Pendleton County Courthouse Courtroom. Fields clarified that the cemetery board should notify the public about meetings at least 24 hours ahead of the meeting time.
The board discussed the need to clean the cemeteries, and community service was suggested as a way to get more people involved in cleaning. Judge Fields committed to checking on the availability of liability insurance for those who would do community service during cleanup.
Judge Fields also informed the board that money is left from a grant that has to be used in specific ways. He  said that the board has a separate fund that can be used at the board’s discretion and that he would check on using the county bucket truck when extra equipment is needed for cemetery cleanup.
The next meeting of the cemetery board will be announced via the newspaper and by other approved means of communication.
