FALMOUTH — Donald Logan lived almost 100 years in Pendleton County.

The founder of the Logan Lumber Co. passed away Feb. 14 at the age of 95.

Make that, 95 1/2.

“A half counts when you’re my age,” Logan would tell his family.

Logan was born July 5, 1928, in a house on Highway 22 East. That home where he grew up still stands and is being renovated by his grandson Jason.

Although Logan was drafted in the Army upon graduation from Falmouth High School in the mid -1940s, he was sent home a year into his service to help his mom on the farm.

His father had had a stroke and the younger Logan, being the only child, was needed to help his family.

He continued to serve in the reserves until they turned the unit into a paratrooper unit.

“I ain’t jumping out of a plane,” Logan had commented about that time.

The paratrooper unit was deployed to Germany, where only three of the group survived.

HIGH SCHOOL

While in high school, Logan was active in sports, playing basketball and softball.

As a high-schooler, Logan and teammate Allen Flaugher got invited to try out for the St. Louis Cardinals, but opted out on this opportunity.

Logan continued playing on an open softball league in Falmouth but hung up his cleats after he broke his ankle sometime in his 30s.

According to Jason Logan, his grandparents met at one of Donald’s high school basketball game. Marjorie “Marge” Staggs was a cheerleader while attending Bracken County High.

They were married for 61 years.

BUSINESS BEGINS

During the early years of his marriage, Logan had a truck and hauled cattle, coal and “whatever anyone wanted to haul,” his son. . .
