Coach Kelsie McClanahan’s team opened the season against ninth region power Notre Dame last Monday. The first game always brings on a case of the nerves, but with all the attention surrounding the virus with less practice time a later start to the season and just the unknown questions of being on the floor for the first time, the nerves were really kicking in.
Both teams battled early and throughout the game as the Lady Pands would stretch a lead out the Ladycats fought back to keep the final outcome in question. Although Notre Dame won the game 45-36, fans could see a lot of positives on the floor for the young team. Coach McClanahan remarked after the game, “I’m really proud of the girls and the way they played tonight. Notre Dame is a strong team to start off the season and we never let down or quit.”
The Ladycats were led by seventh grader Lilly Ashcraft with four three pointers for 12 points and eighth grader Allison Aulick with eight points and Madison Verst and Maci Peoples contributing five points each.
On Wednesday, the Ladycats traveled to Boone County for the opening game of a triple header.
Right from the start the Ladycats showed their dominance as their press and constant pressure forced the Lady Rebels into numerous turnovers and fastbreak opportunities for the Ladycats.
The defense only allowed Boone County two points in the first half. Their lone made goal came from the block on a turn around jumper. The Ladycats were able to score 28 points in the first half and the train kept rolling in the second as the Ladycats put up another 29 points.
Leading scorers for the game were Reese Barlow with 11 points, Maci Peoples for 9, and Allison Aulick added 8.
Although no stats were available the Ladycats played at Dayton Saturday evening and walked out with a 45-11 win.
Coach McClanahan said her team is working really hard in practice and it was showing positive results on the court. The tempo of play and full court defensive pressure the team plays make them entertaining to watch for the fans.
