Pendleton County senior Alex Smith has officially signed his letter of intent to continue his academic and athletic career at Kentucky Christian University in Grayson, Kentucky.
Smith joins teammate and fellow senior Andrew Jordan as the class of 2021 college baseball signees.
“It means everything to me and my family,” said Smith. “It took a lot of hard work. I believed in myself and the process.”
Smith starts at catcher for the Wildcats. It is his first full time season as the starting catcher. Besides catcher, Head Coach Colin Duffie also uses Smith as a pitcher where he both starts and relieves out of the bullpen. At KCU, the coaching staff has plans to use Smith as a pitcher.
“They’ve recruited me as a pitcher, but I’m not going to limit myself to just that,” said Smith. “I’m hoping to play multiple positions to put myself in a spot to where I can help the team daily and help KCU be a great program.”
Outside of the baseball diamond, Smith plans to pursue a major in Middle School Education in Mathematics. His future goal is to become a full-time middle school math teacher.
Smith would like to thank his family, Coach Duffie, and everyone that has been along for the ride supporting him.
“I’ve coached Alex since my first year with the program. He’s improved tremendously since I’ve first started to coach him,” said Duffie. “I’m proud of Alex for how he’s developed as a leader and a ball player. I’m super excited to watch Alex continue his baseball career into the college ranks. He’s worked really hard and is being rewarded for that. I think it’s going to be great for Alex. Plus, he’s going to get a great education at a highly regarded school.”
