Chocolate cake recipe by the Amish Cook Print E-mail

It is Tuesday evening. I’m sitting out here on the front porch and it is very quiet, almost too quiet. My sisters Verena and Susan wanted our five school-age children to come off the bus there and spend the night. They will go back on the bus in the morning. Sister Emma’s three boys also went. They have eight children there from ages six to 14 so I’m sure their evening is quite noisier than usual.

The sun is shining this afternoon. We had a thunderstorm early this morning. The rain kept us out of the garden today. Last night Joe and the children helped get more garden planted. We didn’t get finished yet so hopefully it’ll dry up soon. Our soil is very sandy and dries fast so that helps. We now have planted onions, radishes, lettuce, peas, potatoes, red beets, green beans, cucumbers, corn, sweet peppers, tomatoes, cabbage, banana and hot peppers. Need to plant more corn, watermelon, zucchini and more potatoes yet. So far we have potatoes, peas, radishes, onions, lettuce and corn coming up. Everything is late this year.

Another rainy day! It has been rainy all week. We were able to get all the clothes dried on Monday even though there was a shower after the clothes were on the lines. We need to do laundry again and sure am hoping for a nice day on Friday or Saturday.

Tonight the men from our church district will gather here to practice singing songs from the Ausbund, our German church songbook. It is a good way to get the younger men to learn how to lead all the songs. I need to make something today for a snack to serve to them after the singing.

It is beautiful May morning with the sun shining and the temperature already in the 60s, a perfect day for gardening!

We had a nice but cool day on Sunday to host church services. It was council meeting so church left out around 2:30 p.m. Services began at 9 a.m. Around 11:15 a.m., we had everything ready to begin serving lunch. We had table settings for 34 people at a time.

It is turning out to be a nice, sunny day. The temperature is almost 40. We awoke one morning this week with the ground all covered with snow. It stayed cold for a few days with the temperature going down to 22 one night.

It’s already Thursday, the deadline for me to get this column out in the mail. This week our five children are home on spring break. The boys have been cleaning out the barn and hauling manure. The girls have been helping with the spring cleaning and also cleaning up the yard. We’ve had a few nice days this week now. It gives you the eagerness to want to plant the garden.

April is here, bringing us warmer temperatures. Monday was nice and warm. We hung all the laundry outside on the lines. By evening all of it was dry. How nice to be able to wash the clothes and put them away the same day. It is laundry day again today but it doesn’t look like we will be able to hang the clothes outside. It is rainy and very windy. I’m wondering if we could have a thunderstorm yet today. The frost in the ground is leaving more every day so hopefully it will be okay to get some early garden planted a few weeks from now. Time will tell if the winter weather is over with.

My husband Joe and the boys are hauling manure every chance they get. The manure pile was too frozen to start earlier. Church services will be held here in five weeks so it’s time to get started cleaning up everywhere. The yard needs to be raked but it’s still been too cold to work outside. I’d rather wait until a warmer day to do that.
