The Kentucky Wildcats tweaked their starting lineup (twice) last week and got mixed results as they fell in heartbreaking fashion to Georgia only to rebound days later and notch an impressive home win over LSU.
Head coach John Calipari alluded to changes in his starting lineup prior to his squads Jan. 20 matchup at Georgia and kept his word as Pendleton County product and fan favorite Dontaie Allen earned his first career start along with Lance Ware. They were joined by Olivier Sarr, Davion Mintz and Devin Askew. Kentucky struggled offensively to begin the game and would have difficulty throughout the night as they shot just 1/13 from three-point range on their way to a ninth loss of the season.
Freshman Brandon Boston provided a spark off the bench as he delivered 18 points. Isaiah Jackson and Keion Brooks added 12 points apiece and Allen finished with three points and three rebounds in 23 minutes of action. The game was decided in the final seconds as Georgia successfully executed an inbounds play from underneath their basket with 3.6 seconds remaining to pull out a 63-62 win.
In the days leading into their home matchup versus LSU, it was reported by multiple media outlets that Allen indicated to Calipari during practice that he would be more comfortable coming off the bench instead of starting. Coach Calipari would begin the game with Sarr, Boston, Brooks, Mintz and Askew as the Wildcats enjoyed their most efficient offensive performance to date with a 82-69 win. Five players reached double-figure and Kentucky outrebounded LSU by 19 and committed just seven turnovers. Allen would log just 15 minutes and finished with six points.
