Superintendent Joe Buerkley reached out to Falmouth Outlook to confirm that no in-person learners will be affected by the boys basketball positive Covid test result.

One of the two student-athletes were on the "A" day hybrid schedule and was in class on Monday and Tuesday as Pendleton County Schools started back to in-person learning this week.

After contact tracing was followed, it was determined that no students would be affected by the player.

Superintendent Joe Buerkley announced on Thursday afternoon that two Wildcat basketball players have tested positive for Covid-19 and suffering mild symptoms at this point. The high school boys basketball program will shutdown for 10 days as the players will quarantine.

"The high school is doing a great job of following the Healthy at School protocols," said Buerkley who hoped it would lead to no further spread.

The school district started back to in-person schooling on Monday with "A" students in class on Monday and Tuesday. At least one of the student-athletes were on an A day schedule.

On January 9, the boys basketball team lost to Bath County who announced the next day that they had a player test positive and were shutting their program down for 10 days.

Buerkley indicated that with the players in quarantine that beyond basketball activities the players would not be attending in-person classes.

Five games will have to be postponed or canceled during the 10-day window. They were scheduled to play Campbell County tonight, Mason County on Friday and then Ludlow, Eminence and Carroll County. The next game on the schedule out of the 10-day window is home versus Robertson County in a boy-girl doubleheader on January 26.

The shutdown of boys basketball does not affect the girls basketball program nor the basketball programs at Sharp Middle School.

Before Covid, this article would start by saying the ball being thrown in the air won't happen tonight for the Campbell County vs. Pendleton County game. But now, it's the coin won't be thrown in the air won't happen tonight for the county borderline battle.

Montgomery County, who beat Pendleton County, 73-42, on Tuesday, January 12, announced that one of the three referees who did the varsity game self-reported a positive Covid-19 test on the afternoon of Wednesday, January 13.

Pendleton County Schools released a letter that boys basketball operations will pause through January 15. It indicated that local health departments will be doing contact tracing.

Information was limited but the school district expects more guidance throughout the day on Thursday, January 14 and guidance from Three Rivers Health District.

"Contact with ball, sweat, heavy breathing near each other" is all considered concerns with basketball.
