If you drive Highway 27 between Butler and Falmouth, you have seen the construction taking place on Sharp Middle School’s campus. And if you’re curious like me, you’re wondering What in the world is going on at the football field?

This two-part project involves something that is seen—“major field improvements to the Sharp Middle School athletic complex” and unseen “major upgrade to the HVAC/mechanical system” at the school. Superintendent Joe Buerkley explained.

There “will be major field improvements to the Sharp Middle School athletic complex. This part of the project will provide a state-of-the-art facility to over 200 student athletes each year.” He went on to explain that there will be a new turf field with a track to accommodate football, soccer, and track contests. In addition, the improvements will enhance the spectator experience by including a new concession building, complete with restrooms, new home seating, scoreboard, and a handicap parking lot. “This facility will definitely be something our community can be proud of! This part of the project and many of the updates within the building will be paid for using an offer of assistance we received from the state of Kentucky specifically earmarked for improvements at Sharp Middle School.” Another exciting tidbit that Buerkley shared, is that the project will be completed without incurring any future debt for the district.

“I would personally like to thank State Representative Mark Hart for his assistance in securing these funds for Pendleton County Schools. His willingness to collaborate with me in support of our school district is greatly appreciated,” stated Buerkley.

Buerkley expressed that the field will (hopefully) be ready for student athletes in July. The project inside the school is slated to be completed by the onset of the 2024-25 school year.
