Contributor reflects on Schroder's announcement

Dear Editor
I would like to make some reflections concerning the announcement that Wil Schroder will not seek a third term as state senator. In my world this decision is tantamount to retiring from a job that one could no doubt retain until perpetuity.   This decision to retire is what Wil’s predecessor, Katie Stine, elected to do in 2013. I say, “good for Wil and my friend Katie Stine”. I know of no one including myself that endorses “career politicians”.
Something unique occurred when Wil was elected state senator to replace Katie. Wil was challenged by 3 other republicans in the primary election. No democrats ran for that office. When Wil won the primary, he automatically became state senator for the 24rd KY senatorial district. For the first time in my memory if one was not a registered Republican one had no say as to who became the 24rd district senator.
With senators like Wil, the Kentucky senate saw Republicans in the majority. At the same time the state house saw Republicans in the majority. For me this situation was very good. Republicans are for the most part conservative and more importantly pro-life.
IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO BE THE MAJORITY PARTY IN THE SENATE AND THE HOUSE.
I have not followed Wil’s voting closely but I am confident he voted in a manner for which I would approve. Every time I met Wil and/or his wife we had a very friendly exchange; one might say Wil and I are simpatico.
My position is that if two people agree on everything perhaps one or both needs to evaluate their principles and/or philosophy.  To that end I must reveal one area of disagreement between Wil and myself. We do have a difference of opinion concerning confederate statutes. When I disagree with anyone my tact is: “You have your view, I have a different view, let’s let it go and we can have lunch on my dime”.
In conclusion I will make it known to Wil that I thank him for his service, I wish him the best and “if he needs me, call me”.
