25 Years Ago - Jan/Feb, 1996

    New SuperAmerica convenience and gas station will be open 24 hours. Manager Brenda Phillips says they are glad to be open and in their new store. The new building replaces the older smaller building.
    Icy bridge at Butler blamed for two vehicle accident Wednesday. U.S. 27 was shutdown for approximately an hour to clear the wreck.
    Public hearing held for reconstruction and turning lane on U.S. 27 through Falmouth. A fairly large crowd of business owners, homeowners, and land owners attended the corridor/ design public hearing on Januiary 23. Engineers said no buildings or businesses along the project would have to be torn down. However a few businesses such as the Falmouth Dairy Queen, will have the state’s right of way almost up against their front part of the building. The new right of way will come close to the log cabin of Mrs. Virgiline Moore.
    Pramcare Health Center Pharmacy at 1100 West Shelby opened for business on January 31. They are located next to Dr. Wilbur Wilson’s office.The pharmacist in charge is Melissa Robinsin. Technicians are Marietta Collier, Sandra Toomey, and Anita Day.
    Yelton Home Furnishings on U. S. 27 now open.  Co-owner Mitch Yelton says he’s glad to offer Pendleton County a full line of furniture, flooring, carpet, and vinyls. They also offer VCR repair. Yelton operates another store in Brooksville with his brother Phil and sister in law Rhonda.

50 Years Ago - Jan./Feb., 1971

    Dedication of the new Dr. Scholl’s Industrial Plant at Falmouth will be held January 23, 1971. Distinguished guests have been invited including Gov. Louie B. Nunn, Commissioner of Commerce Paul Grubbs, Congressman M. Gene Snyder, Dr. Scholl’s officials from Cincinnati, Chicago, England, and Germany, and Falmouth Mayor Max Goldberg.
    The Pendleton Wildcats roared back after a solid first half to defeat the Fleming County Panthers 80-66 at Flemingsburg. The Panthers were leading at the half by 13 points. Then in the second half, Pendleton outscored the Panthers at 44-27 to defeat them. Pendleton County was led by Jim Gregg with 19 points.
    Falmouth’s new industrial plant,built by the Falmouth City Council and the citizens of Falmouth was dedicated January 23, 1971.
    Walter Lowe, 78, of Hog Ridge, retired barber, farmer and former employee of the Wiedeman Brewery, passed awayFriday January 22, 1971, at his home.
    Russell Cline Walthers, a native of Pendleton County, passed away suddenly. He was a mechanic.

75 Years Ago - Jan./Feb., 1946

    Some Kentucky tobacco markets did a right about face act this week and turned in sharply higher averages. The statewide average jumped $1.05 a hundred pounds to $38.62.
    Fred Hafer, a native of Pendleton County, opened Saturday a new store next to the post office in Falmouth to be known as the Hafer Farm Supplies. For the past eleven years Mr. Hafer has been county agent of Meade County at Bradenburg.
    The new vice president of Falmouth Deposit Bank is D. M. Daugherty, Falmouth lumberman. He succeeeds the late Frank W. Stith.
    Herman Ramsey of this city purchased Monday all of the business of Thomas & Thornberry Oil and Implement Co. in this city.
    The Butler Bobcats defeated Corinth on Friday night last 29-24.
    Two stolen cars were recovered in Pendleton County last week by the new sheriff, Alvin Thompson, which were among his first official acts of his term.
    William Henry Reeves, the son of tThomas and Ruth Reeves, was born September 7, 1875 in Pendleton County, Ky., and passed away at his home in Butler on Tuesday December 18, 1946.
    John F. Rust passed away Monday, January 7, 1946 at the residence of his son, Henry, at California. He was 92 years of age.

100 Years Ago - Jan./Feb., 1921

    The remains of Earl Elliott, who was killed in action in France in July 1918, arrived heree Saturdayafternoon and were taken to the home of his father Martin Elliott.
    Richard Tarvin was born June 15, 1839 and passed away January 8, 1921.Born on January 8 to the wife of David Sharp of Johnsville, a fine daughter. The little lady will be known as Etta Lorene.
    John Perry, aged 74 years, one of the best known citizens of Butler, passed away Wednesday morning.
    Joel Newton Ratcliffe was born in Flagg Springs on April 26, 1835 and departed this life January 9, 1921 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Sellers.
    Leroy Barton has disposed of his tobacco crop at the bulging price-- five cents per pound.
    The Lexington market sold last week 4,500,000 pounds of tobacco at an average of $13.50.
    Orville Tomlin sold to B. C. H. Simpson this week a tract of land containing 17 acres for $2,000. This is the same tract transferred to Mr. Tomlin a year ago from Gus Gilbert of Dry Ridge, for which he paid $5,500.
    I. Downard purchased the old Lytle farm recently.
