25 Years Ago - January, 1996

    Marble shootings lead to arrest of Cynthiana man, Edward Walker, 40, and a Somerset man, Robert Wright, Jr., 28.  Numerous businesses and residents along U.S. 27 in Falmouth and Pendleton County also sustained marble damage. No one was injured in Pendleton County. It is believed a slingshot was used to shoot the marbles.
    The new McDonald’s restaurant opened on December 27. Mayor Max Goldberg cut the ribbon officially opening Wednesday morning. Two employees, Chad Wolfe and Shea Wilson, raised the American Flag as the Northern Elementary sixth grade chorus sang the National Anthem under the direction
    Pendleton DECA took a bite out of the Big Apple as 17 students visited NBC Studios, FAO Schwart, Madison Square Gardens, The Phil Donahue Show, Central Park, Greenwich Village, China Town and the fashion center.They saw CATS on Broadway and visited the Fashion Institute of Technolgoy.
    George McClanahan was recognized for 50 years of service to the Butler Fire Department.
    Pendleton County was moved to the newly created House 79th District that would include a small part of Campbell County, Pendleton, Harrison and Robertson County. In the Senate, it was moved out of the 26th District and into the 24th District with Senator Gex “Jay” Williams. It will include all of Campbell County and Pendleton County.
    For first time in 45 years, there will be two drugstores in Falmouth as Pharmcare Health Center pharmacy opened with a drive-thru window.
    Rick Spencer was elected Fire Chief of the Northern Pendleton County Volunteer Fire Department. He replaced Larry Miller.
    Wildcats beat Sheldon Clark and were led in scoring by David Turner with 16, Kevin Conrad with 15 and Nathan Peoples with 13.
    After many months of prepartion, planning and design, a groundbreaking ceremony was held on the land in Menzie Bottoms for Phillip A. Sharp Middle School.
    A winter storm dropped 14 inches of snow on Pendleton County late Saturday night into Sunday morning.

50 Years Ago - January, 1971

    The Butler Bobcats were winners of the Pendleton County Junior High Tournament at Morgan Gym. Butler was also winners of the conference trophy with all wins and no losses.Fifth and sixth grade tournament winner was the Saint Xavier Tigers.
    Mrs. Fern Clayton Otto passed away at her home in Joshua Tree, California. She was formertly of Falmouth and had worked for many years at the Fahra Drug Store in Falmouth.
    Pendleton County regained their winning ways by downing Bryan Station 89-77. Pendleton out rebounded Bryan Station and was led in this department by Griffin with 17, Ice 16, and Gregg 12. Roger Utz came off the bench and played an outstanding floor game and contributed 16 points.
    The Pendleton County Wildcats defeated Scott County, 84-63 Tuesday , December 22, on the Pendleton floor.

75 Years Ago - January, 1946

    After 41 months of service in the U. S. Army, five of which were spent in a German prison camp, Sgt. Frank T. Florence Jr. was discharged on Nov. 25
    Pvt. William E. Knuckles, husband of Clara P. Knuckles of Rigg St. Falmouth, has been awarded the Bronze Star.
    Mr. and Mrs. Ethel Payne of Butler have received a telegram from their son, Pvt. Earl Payne, informing them of his arrival in the United States. Pvt. Payne has been in the service three years and five months, in which he has served 21 months overseas with Patton’s Third Army in Germany.
    General George S. Patton Jr. passed away last week at Heidelberg, Germanyas a result of injuries received in an automobile wreck.    
    With tobacco dropping to a new low on the markets in the state before they closed for the Christmas holidays, Pendleton County Farm Bureau directors were greatly disturbed last week and several of the made a special trip to Paris on Saturday to meet with other farm leaders of the state. Burley growers from 17 central Kentucky counties met Saturday and voiced their approval of a 20 percent cut in the 1946 acreage allotments throughout the burley belt and increadesed penalties for over production

100 Years Ago - January, 1921

    J. W. (Will) Blades highly respected citizen of Powersville, passed away at his home Monday evening.
    Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Fields of Concord received a fine Christmas present on December 25 from Old Santa Claus in the form of an 8 1/4 pound baby boy.
    Born to the wife of F. B. Stahl of near DeMossville on December 27, a fine little son, the ninth heir.
    Mr. and Mrs. William Lawson of near Hightower are the proud parents of twin babies. They were born December 15, names Maxwell Henry and Mabel Lena.
    Born to the wife of Paul Antrobus (nee Miss Fanny Harris) on December 16, a boy, Randall Leon.
