The problems continue to mount for Head Coach John Calipari and his Kentucky Wildcats. A 70-59 road loss at Alabama marked the tenth defeat of the season and on Jan. 29 the season came to a screeching halt following reports that there were multiple Covid tests within the program resulting in the cancellation of their Jan. 30 showdown versus top five ranked Texas.
How many positive tests and how long the season may be put on hold remains to be seen, but it adds another wrinkle into the season unlike no other for Big Blue nation. Kentucky battled diligently against the ninth ranked Crimson Tide on Jan. 26 and held a slim 54-52 lead with four minutes to go in the game but squandered opportunities down the stretch and fell apart offensively resulting in an 11-point loss.
Alabama knocked down 24-28 free throws (22 in the second half) and used a 10-0 run in the final minutes to put the game away. Pendleton County product Dontaie Allen tied two other Wildcats with 12 points as he fanned four trey’s in 23 minutes of action.
Following the loss, Coach Calipari told reporters that his team needs to be tougher and figure out ways to score when its needed the most.
“We got the ball where we wanted to at times, and then we didn’t have the toughness to hold on to it. You have to be strong with the ball. Look, we don’t have a guy you throw it to and he goes one-on-one and gets by anybody. We don’t have that guy, so we’ve got to do it different. The reality of it is, this team just doesn’t know how to finish mentally or physically yet. I’ve just got to keep working on them.”
