25 Years Ago - December 22, 1998

VEGE Motoren of the Netherlands has contracted with Volvo Cat North America to re-manufacture engines and cylinder heads for the North American car market at their branch operation in Falmouth. VEGE is the first company outside of Europe to receive such a contract.

Pendleton County Fiscal Court members voted to reject the bids with the exception of two packages on the 75-bed facility at the December 15 court meeting. The bids came in $831,000 over budget.

Falmouth Mayor Max Goldberg was presented an appreciation award by Falmouth Mayor-elect Jim Hamond on Dec. 18 on behalf of the Housing Authority of Falmouth. The presentation honoring Goldberg for his 25 plus years of service to the Housing Authority took place during the meeting of the Housing Authority Council.

Joint funeral services held for Mr. Raymond Moore and Mrs. Dorcia Galloway Moore on Thursday, Dec. 13. Mrs. Galloway's son Raymond passed 21 hours before her.

A state judge refused to allow the death penalty to be called for in the trial of two men accused of killing a Lexington minister and his two children. The Pendleton County Grand Jury does not select until after the first of the year. The two came to Falmouth and killed three men here at the Fisher Motel.

 

75 Years Ago - December 24, 1948

A Christmas sermon that was rich in meaning was delivered by the Rev. Carl Sears, Baptist Minister, at the Falmouth Christian Church Sunday evening in the annual White Christmas program that was sponsored by the Welfare and Values Committee of the Falmouth Women's Club.

John Griffin, owner of the Griffin Fertilizer Co., opened his plant Tuesday. The new plant is located near Greenwood...

The Falmouth Post Office had its biggest day of business in its history Monday when 14,404 cancellations were made, according to Kenneth T. Marquette, postmaster, in an announcement Thursday afternoon. He added that there was also a heavy parcel post mailing.

Six Pendleton men out of a total of 20 passed their physical examinations when they went to Louisville Dec. 6. The men passing were Ralph Pettit, David King, Jr., Floyd E. Purdy, Ralph Schlueter, Donald E. Browning, and G. B. Dunaway.

100 Years Ago - December 21, 1923

Congressman A. B. Rouse has introduced the following bill in Congress: Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled. That the Secretary of the Treasury be, and he is hereby authorized and directed to cause to be erected upon the site already selected, as provided by Art approved March 4, 1915, in the city of Falmouth, Pendleton County, a suitable building, including fireproof vaults, heating and ventilating apparatus, elevators and approaches, for the use and accommodation of the United States post office and other Government offices in the said city of Falmouth, KY, the cost of said building including said vaults, heating and ventilating apparatus, elevators, and approaches, complete, not to exceed the sum of $75,000.

The citizens and taxpayers of Pendleton County are urged to attend a mass meeting to be held in Falmouth next Saturday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock for the purpose of hearing a report from the committee appointed to investigate the records and authority of the road commission in regard to the building of the concrete road from Greenwood to the Campbell county line. The purpose of this meeting is to prevent the county from spending all the bond issue on seven miles of concrete road, when the taxpayers were promised before the election that this money would be proportioned all over the county.

A mass meeting was held by a large number of taxpayers in Falmouth last Saturday afternoon to take some steps to prevent the county from building seven miles of concrete road from Greenwood through Butler to the Campbell County line.... A committee of F. W. Conrad, Hayden Ellis, William Dahms, G. M. Davis and P.E. Conroy was appointed to investigate the matter and confer with attorneys in regard to legal steps. This committee will report at a meeting called to meet in Falmouth next Saturday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock. 

The injunction suit of the city of Falmouth against F. T. Chipman to prevent him from erecting gasoline and coal oil tanks near the Burley warehouse came up before Judge J. D. Dedman last Saturday. The judge took the case under advisement and will hand down a decision within the next ten days.

Prohibition Agents James Wood and W. C. Huddleston, assisted by six secret service agents, raided a house on the old Glahn farm near Alexandria in Campbell County Monday. Four men were arrested in the yard, and two men ran from the house and shot at the secret service against. The fire was returned and one man was killed and his companion escaped. The man who was shot was identified as John Ossage. All men were residents of Newport.
