Jim LaFollette presented information to the court regarding the ambulance board. He said over $400,000 was collected from the franchise tax, and it was a big help in getting the ambulance service on solid ground. As of right now, they have a reserve of $300,000 and 20 employees, a mix of full and part time, and are running two fully staffed ALS squads.
Magistrate Mineer remarked, “You all have done an excellent job getting things turned around from where it was.” The tax rate is maxed at 10 cents per $100.
The Library reported that they are once again open and functioning in the community. The bookmobile was making runs and serving as a mobile free Wi-Fi hub at each of its stops. A new service that has been started and will expand is visual presentations that allow patrons to log in and watch videos online. The library is also continuing their activity kits which they started during the beginning of the pandemic. This allows patrons to come in and pick up an activity kit to take home and construct. So far this year, the library has distributed over 600 kits. Their tax rate will be .121 per $100 on General Real Estate, .1966 on General Tangible Personal Property and .1966 on Inventory
The airport reported to the court that it had been approved for an $8.2 million grant for repairs and expansion. The project should take around 180 days to complete unless winter causes a delay. The project is large in scale and will allow the airport to accept larger airplanes in the future. Discussion of the county tax rate for property, vehicle, and and watercraft remained the same with property tax being 15.5% and vehicle and watercraft remaining at 16%. The court also decided to lower the mental tax rate to .020%.
In road news, Mago was awarded the contract for supplying cold patch. Mago was also awarded the contract for roads that will need to be blacktopped in the future. These roads include Crowley Road, Smith Road, Newkirk, Chad Lane and others.
The court voted to continue the Code Red emergency notification system for four more years as a way to provide county residents timely and important emergency information.
After the 2020 election, Judge Fields informed the court that the state was moving back to paper voting machines, away from the computer voting machines that have been used recently in elections.
