Seth Longworth received national acclaim when the video he directed was selected as Best Overall at the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) annual conference and exposition in Phoenix last week. Longworth is a second-year pharmacy student at the University of Cincinnati. He is the Communications Vice President for the Academy of Student Pharmacists (ASP) chapter at UC.

The ASP chapter was given the theme of “Courage to Change”. Longworth and his team of 10 fellow student pharmacists decided to do a parody of the Ed Sheeran song “Bad Habits” and focusing on patients and pharmacists working together towards better health. The video represents how the patient can have the “courage to change” and walk along with their pharmacist when struggling with diseases like diabetes.

Longworth also emphasizes the pharmacist having the “courage to change” by speaking up and saying something to help the patient. Pharmacists have resources which can assist patients in making lifestyle changes to improve overall health.

Longworth’s PharmFlix video entry was chosen from ten video submissions out of pharmacy schools across the nation. Its focus coincides with the outreach goals of ASP to educate the public and help them understand the role of the pharmacist. Pharmacists are often the most accessible health care provider for individuals. In fact, the APhA is advocating for provider status for pharmacists.

Longworth is almost halfway through his pharmaceutical program. Soon he hopes to do a two-year residency at a hospital. Currently, Longworth is a pharmacist intern at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati. He helps with filling medications, discharge counseling, shadowing of pharmacists, working in the emergency room with high-risk patients, and assisting when there is a Code Blue.
