Alexandria Black, granddaughter of Kathleen and Daniel Black, Butler, and Calliope Warren, daughter of Clinton and Alicia Warren, Butler, have been selected as the recipients of the 2024 Sharp Family and Class of 1962 Scholarships.

Alexandria Black

Alexandria, as the recipient of the Sharp Family Scholarship, has been a student resident at the Craft Academy on the campus of Morehead State University for the past two years.

She has excelled academically with an emphasis in advanced math and science classes while achieving a 3.87 grade-point average and a high ACT college entrance exam score.

With Alexandria’s enrollment in STEM classes, she has participated in research trials involving radioactive decay in schools and was selected to represent Kentucky at the recent American Junior Academy of Science meeting.

Her extra-curricular activities include Honor Society, Interact Club president, peer tutor and focus group leader for fellow Craft students, and participation in the Hazel Green Revitalization Project.

While at Craft, she has received the President’s and Dean’s Scholar Awards, and the prestigious Thoroughbred Award from the Kentucky Academy of Science.

Her summers have included working at the Pendleton County Public Library and at McDonald’s to finance her college expenses.

A Craft Department of Science professor commented, “Alexandria possesses a high level of professionalism, maturity and grit, though she is compassionate, caring and has an unshakable outlook on life.  Ally possesses a level of dedication and discipline that few possess at her age or ever. I am so impressed with her achievements and her enormous potential.”

Alexandria stated her time at Craft has stimulated her passion for learning about science and how that learning can be used to help people. Her plans are to attend the University of Louisville this fall and major in biology with a future career in the medical field.

Calliope Warren

Calliope, as the recipient of the Sharp Class of 1962 Scholarship, has been a student in the Young Scholars Academy at Northern Kentucky University for two years. She has obtained a 4.0 grade-point average and a high ACT score while acquiring credits in multiple dual credit classes, mainly in the areas of science.

She has been extremely active as Student Council president, Senior Council and Academic Team member, cross country and track team captain for three years, and American Legion Girls State representative at Pendleton High School.

She has received numerous awards with her participation in NJROTC.

Calliope has been very active on the YSA campus, where she has served as a psychological chemistry teaching assistant, a mentor for YSA orientation to the College Seminar Course and a peer tutor for statistics and chemistry classes.

Her employment includes working at Cracker Barrel and as an NKU teaching assistant. She is also an active member of Grassy Creek Christian Church.

A professor from YSA’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry made the following comment on Calliope: “She has excellent study habits, work ethic and a maturity beyond that of a high school student. She is a well-rounded individual who is engaged in her school and community. She has challenged herself with taking college courses as well as a variety of leadership and community service roles.

“A responsible student, she takes initiative and responsibility for her own learning.”

Calliope stated her courses in psychology, criminology, biology and chemistry have given her the confidence to choose her career path as a psychiatrist who collaborates with law enforcement in criminal behavior analysis and inmate rehabilitation. Her STEM classes are her favorite each week, and she is enjoying her role as a teaching assistant this semester.

Her future plans are to attend the University of Kentucky or Coastal Carolina University and major in pre-med psychology with a minor in criminology/forensic psychology.
