According to the KHSAA record book, Talbert Turner with 3,183 points and Dontaie Allen with 3,143 points make Pendleton County High School as the only school in the state with two 3,000 point scorers. Only 35 times have a player broken the 3,000 point scorers and to have two at the same school, well, is unmatched.
Turner indicated he plans on being at each of the games to honor Allen when the record is broken.
“Someone told me back when he (Allen) first started playing as an 8th grader, ‘This guy is going to break all of your records.’ I said ‘If he does, he’s earned it.’ He has and I am proud of him,” said Turner, who indicated that while his work travels have prevented him from seeing Allen play, Talbert, Sr. and Troy Steele have kept him updated on his ability and play.
When that moment comes that the two legends meet, what words will Turner have for Allen. “I want him to be proud of his accomplishments. Have confidence in himself. He is as good as anyone on that floor and to play that way when he gets to UK. Work hard, get stronger and remember that the rim is still just 10 feet tall.”
Editor’s Note: There has been discussion on social media that McCreary Central has two 3,000 point scorers but that is not indicated in the official KHSAA record book.
