Falmouth candidates talk utilities: Craig Owen

Based on information given to me by someone who has experience with the city’s government, and a much better understanding of how it currently operates, I definitely feel that certain utilities should be outsourced. Going this route with the electrical distribution system and trash services could be financially beneficial to both the city of Falmouth and its residents.
I’ve been hearing for years that the electrical distribution system in Falmouth is antiquated and in desperate need of an upgrade. As a local business owner, I’ve experienced firsthand the type of frustration this issue can bring.  Unfortunately, it seems that the city’s current financial situation prevents it from making the necessary upgrades that are so desperately needed.  Allowing an outside company to take over and make these upgrades could potentially offer lower rates for residents, and also make the city more appealing to new businesses looking to locate in Falmouth.
Concerning the trash services, Rumpke already operates in the county and various locations within the city. Trash collection for my area is on Thursday, but I see a Rumpke truck drive past my house on Wednesday.  It’s also my understanding that the city pays a substantial fee to Rumpke for the option to dump trash in their landfill. Taking all that into consideration, I really don’t see a need for the city to be in the trash collection business. It’s adding what I see as another financial burden to the city and eliminating the possibility of lower rates for residents.
