In regards, to utilities, the challenge now and through the next decade should be communication, infrastructure management, and maintenance. Infrastructure (water, sewage, trash, and garbage) must be planned and executed on an annual basis. Waiting years, or possibly decades, to develop timelines and plans for repairs is not acceptable for a community which aspires to grow both residentially and commercially. Communication with our city workers (the experts of each of our utilities) will be critical. This process has already begun as each city utility department provides a monthly summary and a plan of action for future issues. By achieving a high level of communication, maintenance can be planned and achieved in a timely, cost efficient manner. Maintenance to the utilities should be a preventive plan instead of a “fix it as it breaks” format. While extreme cases can always occur, action taken through communication, management of utility resources, and preventive maintenance will limit the impacts of those events and prove to be the most cost-effective option over an extended period of time.
