By Gabby Boschert, Sources of Strength Leader
You may or may not have heard about Sources of Strength. Sources of Strength is a new program that has been implemented in the Pendleton County School District. This program aims to prevent suicide, bullying, and substance abuse by increasing help-seeking behaviors and promoting connectedness between peers and trusted adults. The power of the program lies within the voices of Peer Leaders, who help create campaigns to share messages of hope, help and strength throughout the school year. These campaigns are based on several different strengths from the Sources of Strength Wellness Wheel, which include: Family Support, Positive Friends, Mentors, Healthy Activities, Generosity, Spirituality, Physical Health, and Mental Health.
As students, we know life has its difficulties, therefore our mission this school year is to spread generosity among our peers and community. Our view of generosity is the quality of being kind and generous toward others.
Why Generosity?
Being generous can improve health by lowering stress levels, provide an emotional boost with increased happiness, and can dramatically improve relationships. Some acts of generosity include helping older adults with loading groceries in their car, or simply just spending time with someone who may be lonely or going through a difficult time. You can do a random act of kindness by paying for someone’s groceries or meal. You can volunteer somewhere, or donate to charity. It’s not just about donating your money; it can be as easy as holding the door open for someone walking behind you. A way we plan to help the community is by spreading awareness about the Pendleton County Animal Shelter.
The Peer Leaders at Pendleton County High School will be hosting a toy and treat drive within the student body to raise awareness and donations. We will also be volunteering at the Pendleton County Animal Shelter on November 13th. Animals are great emotional boosters, and they can help you to feel like you are not alone and have some support by your side, as well as help reduce anxiety and depression. They can truly be like a best friend or even feel like family.
We would also like to announce that we will be hosting an event titled, “Building a Community of Strength Through Generosity” on November 29th from 6-8p.m. at the Pendleton County Extension Office, if you are interested in attending.
At this event, you can learn more about our local furry friends, how our youth are committed to building a community of strength, and stick around for a Sources of Strength showcase, crafts, activities, snacks, and doggy bags to go. Feel free to bring some items to donate to our Animal Shelter. Their wish list includes small blankets, toys, pig ears, soft treats, and Fabuloso cleaner. Anything helps!
