Changes at Northern and Southern Elementary
Students and their families will notice a few changes at Northern and Southern Elementary schools this year.
The first being the cost of breakfast and lunch. Due to the schools ability to qualify for the Community Eligibility Program (CEP)of the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs all students in those schools will receive breakfast and lunch at no cost. This recommendation was made to the Pendleton County Board of Education at the June 16 meeting by Superintendent Anthony Strong, and was unanimously approved.
“When a child’s nutritional needs are met, the child is more attentive in class and has better attendance and fewer disciplinary problems. We urge your children to participate in this opportunity for a no cost breakfast and lunch daily for the 2015-2016 school year,” stated Superintendent Strong.
The second change is the elimination of school fees. Based upon the eligibility of the schools for the CEP program the board voted to eliminate the $20 student fee at the July 27 meeting. This change brings the elementary schools more in line with others across the state that are participating in the CEP program.
Although all students at Southern and Northern Elementary schools will receive breakfast and lunch without any charge, the district will still need assistance in completing paperwork for eligibility for various additional state and federal program benefits that the children. So please look for that paperwork in the back-to-school packets and turn it in at the beginning of school year.
