Native Americans, a missing voice

Education regarding Native Americans in the Pendleton County School District, if my memory serves me correctly, almost exclusively involved historical reflections on the interactions between European settlers and the indigenous populations in the eastern United States. This is certainly not a unique experience for young people throughout the country, as most public and private schools teach and prioritize the communication of generally the same narrative involving the “savagery” of the first people of this land and efforts made by European settlers to “help” them using religious indoctrination and teaching them more “efficient” ways to live with and upon the landscape.
