Claire Lou Holmes (nee Amend) was born in Dayton, Kentucky to George John Amend and Katrina Mary Barbara Ashorn on September 20, 1927. She died on Sunday, November 17, 2024, in Edgewood, Kentucky. Claire lived her young life in Fort Thomas then Bellevue, Kentucky and attended St. Anthony grade school followed by St. Anthony Commercial School.
Claire married Charles (Charlie) Gosney Holmes on April 10, 1950, and is preceded in death by Charlie (2013); daughter—Charlene Gail White (nee Holmes); and son-in-law Anthony John White.
She is survived by her children Connie Gaye Larson (Jan Arthur), Charles Gosney Holmes, Jr. (Yvonne Rich), Clayton George Holmes (Nancy Appel), Christopher Gary Holmes, Sr. (Elizabeth Zerhusen). She leaves two sisters – Ruth Reinermann and Marilyn Esselman (Lou) and a brother Richard Amend; plus nine grandchildren: Catrina White; Coleman Holmes, Caroline Hautala (Gavin), Corinne Turner (Trevor), Carter Holmes, Christopher Gary, Jr. (CJ), Chase, Karston and Kyle Holmes.
She is preceded in death by her parents, George and Katrina and siblings – Bernard, Ellsworth and George Amend, and Catherine May Taske.
Claire worked as a secretary and then a stay-at-home mom for their five children. She later worked part-time for Northern Kentucky Board of Realtors and Casson Realty in Alexandria, Kentucky while the children were in school.
Claire and Charlie moved to Grant’s Lick, Kentucky in 1957. She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption in Alexandria for over 65 years and active in the St. Mary’s Mothers Club, Bishop Brossart Boosters and St. Mary’s Seniors.
Visitation followed by Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, November 25 at the St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Alexandria.
Interment took place at Butler Cemetery, Pendleton County, Butler, Kentucky.
