The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) announces that a project to make long-awaited improvements on U.S. 27 in southern Campbell and northern Pendleton counties is to begin May 10.
Local officials and the public identified three areas of the corridor in particular need of improvement, and the project will focus on those areas.
“We are happy to start this project that will improve the corridor and make it a safer roadway for those who travel through and live here,” said Bob Yeager, chief district engineer of Department of Highways District 6, in Covington.
    Improvements will include:
Adding a right turn lane at KY 177 onto U.S. 27 in Pendleton County with a new lane connecting to the current truck lane on northbound U.S. 27.
Realignment of the intersection at U.S. 27 and Boss Dunaway Road in Pendleton County.
Realignment of the intersection of U.S. 27 and Plum Creek Church Road in Campbell County.
Included in the third lane for KY 177 and US 27 Intersection portion will be a reworking of the intersection of US 27 and Lock Road.
Included in the the intersection of US 27 and Boss Dunaway portion will be a redirection of Boss Dunaway that would lead to the intersections to be in Pendleton County. Pendleton County road maintenance would then be responsible for the maintenance of the road. Presently, the last portion of the northern part of the road is in Campbell County and a very small section. It has been neglected throughout the years.
“I’m excited to see the 27N. road project in Butler starting and moving forward, even though it is a reduced project from where it started, it will still address several safety and maintenance concerns,” said Judge Executive David Fields.
He continued, “Additional turning lanes with an additional northbound lane from the intersection to match the current 2-N bound lanes will be an improvement in dealing with the congested traffic in the area. Another important improvement will be on the northern portion of Boss Dunaway Road; this will help in the future maintenance of that section. Currently that section is located in Campbell Co. which restricts Pendleton Co. from performing any type of maintenance on that section. It is planned to be relocated inside Pendleton Co. and additionally will give better site safety when pulling onto US27. We ask that citizens plan ahead for possible construction delays and be patient while the construction is in progress. Once it is completed, it will be a great improvement for the area and Pendleton County
Motorists can expect flaggers for culvert work near KY 177.  Also, watch for crews, equipment and possible lane closures within the work zone.
KYTC awarded the $5.6 million project to Lawrence Construction & Leasing, Inc. of Walton, Kentucky.   The project has a July 1, 2022 completion date.
In addition, there is a repaving project ongoing on U.S. 27 from Pendleton Hills to Hwy 177 and will also cause one-lane traffic with delays. Motorists should be aware and drive safely in these construction zones.
