In the national debate surrounding the legalization of marijuana production and consumption in certain states around the country, significant misconceptions have been communicated about industrial hemp and the possibilities for federal legislation legalizing its production. While hemp is of the same plant species as marijuana, it is genetically different and distinguished by its use and chemical makeup. Hemp plants are low in THC, marijuana’s primary psychoactive chemical, with levels less than one percent compared to an average of ten percent for marijuana plants.
