The life and times of African-American journalist Alice Allison Dunnigan

Alice Allison Dunnigan, a pioneering journalist, was born in Russellville, Kentucky on April 27, 1906. Her father, Willie, was a sharecropper who raised tobacco and her mother, Lena, took in laundry. She grew up in a household where an emphasis on hard work was stressed. She started attending school one day a week at the age of four and learned to read before entering the first grade.
