25 Years Ago - December 1, 1998

The first reading of the ordinance allowing for a one percent payroll tax for the city of Falmouth was heard November 24 at a special meeting of the Falmouth City Council. The reading followed lengthy discussion and sometimes heated debate.

Inspectors from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration have issued five citations to Dravo Lime Company in connection with the October 12, 1998 fatal accident that killed Michael Sanzere, 45, a chemist from Dayton, KY.

Warren Shonert was presented a plaque Thursday, November 19, in memory of Genevieve Shonert.

Martin Daugherty and Monica Musard are proud to announce the birth of their daughter Krystal C. Daugherty. Krystal was born November 8 at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas.

 

50 Years Ago - November 30, 1973

Pendleton County merchants are now all ready for the Christmas shopping season. Their stores are full of Christmas merchandise and their windows are gaily decorated for Christmas.

Santa Claus arrives in Falmouth this Saturday, December 1st, on the Falmouth Fire Truck. A parade is being planned by the Pendleton Jaycees...

Tobacco market opens Monday with $85 to $87 average; prices are strong, but crop is light and short.

 

75 Years Ago - December 3, 1948

The 1948 opening day tobacco average Monday was around $49.46, or the highest average for any opening in recorded history of burley auctions. Last season's Statewide average was $48.61.

Once again, the Falmouth Red Devils and the Butler Bobcats will engage in their traditional basketball game next Tuesday night, December 7, on the Butler floor.

Falmouth will be decorated with holiday lights and holly during the Christmas season, which will add much to shoppers and visitors' delight.

This Friday and Saturday, December 3 and 4, Midwest Bottle Gas Distributors, Inc., Falmouth, will observe their grand opening, in their new brick building on U.S. 27 in West Falmouth.

 

100 Years Ago - November 30, 1923

Last Saturday afternoon, L.M. Conrad of Goforth found two men hunting on his farm. He politely informed them that his land was posted and they would have to get off his farm. Mr. Conrad did not know either one of them and advanced toward one who was down in a hollow. When he got within about 50 yards of the man, he was warned not to come another step or he would kill him...This man proved to be Ben Cummins of near Carntown.

On Saturday evening, December 16th, at 7:30, there will be a union Christmas service held at the Falmouth Christian Church. ...All who attend are invited to share in the service by bringing some gift wrapped in white.

At the November meeting of the Women's Christian Temperance Union at this place, there was a desire on the part of the members unanimously expressing that thanks and appreciation be sent to Editor of the Outlook for the kindly and outspoken attitude toward and for prohibition and law enforcement taken by this paper.

Benjamin Floyd Arnold, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Arnold, of 528 Maple Avenue, Falmouth, is a member of the Freshman football team at the University of Kentucky. In the recent game with the Vanderbilt Freshman eleven, Arnold played quarterback and led the Kentucky Freshman team in an admirable manner.
