25 Years Ago - November 11, 1997

AA Highway getting the name of being a deadly stretch to travel. Speed, lighting and lack of stop lights, and the need for more lanes were cited as problems for the stretch that runs from Alexandria to Ashland.

Tires, tires, and more tires is the way to explain the tire dump on Miller Road in Pendleton County. The extremely large dump is being cleaned up by the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Agency at a cost of $378,600.

The Falmouth Post Office wants to celebrate their return to the newly remodeled post office building with the community. An open house will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, at their 201 West Shelby Street location.

The free debris removal for the residents of Falmouth ended Nov. 1.

Brad Crouch shot a coyote as he was out deer hunting near Caddo when the coyote ran toward him.

 

50 Years Ago - November 10, 1972

 

President Nixon carried 49 of the 50 states in the presidential election on Tuesday and obtained a total of 521 electoral votes. Sen. George McGovern carried only one state, receiving 17 electoral votes.

Dillie C. Hutton, Berry Postmaster died at the University of Ky Medical Center shortly after midnight on Nov. 4th.

The home of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Ashby of Falmouth and Morgan Road burned to the ground last Thursday morning around 3 a.m. They were able to safely escape with their three children.

Southern Elementary will have their second skating party of the year at RECA Roller Rink from 7-9 p.m. on Nov. 16. Everyone is invited.

Pendleton Youth Fair, Inc. takes lead in building new Youth Fair Center and Complex for Pendleton.

December 4th is declared Andy Proeschel Day. Andy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Karl Proeschel had surgery and are asking for the community to donate blood in honor of the day. The bloodmobile from Children’s Hospital will be at the Farm Bureau building from 4-9 p.m. At least 150 donors are needed.

The Pendleton High basketball fans will have a chance to get an early preview of the 1972-73 version of Coach Wood’s Wildcats on Thursday Nov. 9th at 6:30 p.m. for an intra-squad game featuring two teams composed of the varsity squad.

 

75 Years Ago - November 7, 1947

Earle C. Clements wins in Pendleton County by 432. Democrat candidate for governor expected to carry state by a majority of 50,000 to 75,000 votes. There was much apathy among the voters of Pendleton County on Tuesday and less than 50 percent of the registered voters took the trouble or time to go to the polls.

Pendleton County voters overwhelmed the proposition to call a convention to write a new state constitution by an unofficial majority of 1,298 against it. The unofficial vote was 1,507 votes against the issue and 309 for. This is about a 5 to 1 majority.

Right-of-way deeds for spur into south end of city arrive; both city and county involved. The new spur, which may be concrete, will begin at the corner of Main and Shelby Streets and follow the present roadbed along the old Cynthiana Pike. The new road, should all the deeds by signed, will leave the old roadbed at a curve and emerge on new U.S. 27 near the home of George Klee.

This has been a remarkable fall and the long spell of warm weather has caused many fruit trees to bloom and bear fruit.

 

100 Years Ago - November 10, 1922

One of the greatest river fires that ever occurred at Cincinnati took place Saturday morning last when four large steamboats burned. They were the Island Queen, Tacoma, Morning Star, and Chris Greene. The fire started on the Morning Star and spread to the other boats in the harbor. The loss will amount to several hundred thousands of dollars. These steamers were tied up at the wharf, and the fire spread so rapidly they could not get away. Elmer Funcher of this county was the captain of the Chris Greene, but he was not on the boat when it was burned.

In the general election held in Pendleton County Tuesday, there were only 1,854 votes cast. The bond issue carried by 854.

A. B. Rouse, the Democratic candidate for Congress carried the county by 1,338 and his majority in the district will be more than 10,000.

J.U. Riggle, Democrat of this city, received 25 votes for Congress on the Socialist ticket, and Rev. B. G. Koons, of Pribble’s Crossroads, received one vote on the same ticket.

Hoyt Caldwell and Sheriff C. B. Peoples have purchased a fine registered Holstein calf from a stock farm in Massachusetts.

Mrs.Thomas E. Blades, one of the county’s best gardeners residing on Straight Shoot Pike, sent us a beet Monday that weighs 16 pounds. Who can beat this beet?

There was a large crowd in town Monday, and about the only topic discussed was the proposed $250,000 bond issue, and it was a hot argument with the voters. There were a lot of horses on the market which sold from $3 up to $100. Two-year-old mules brought from $60 to $100.

The Falmouth football team again defeated Butler last Sunday by a  score of 20 to 6.
