Son proud of father’s service during World War II

I saw your article regarding World War II Veterans of Pendleton County and I wanted to forward to you the exploits of my father, Harry J. Smith. I am a resident of Pendleton County, Butler, but my dad was a lifelong resident of Campbell County..Dayton, Alexandria, Newport and Ft. Thomas. He joined the Navy in 1943, when I was two years old, and while on his way to boot camp via train, a Marine recruiter walked through the car and asked for two volunteers for the Marine Corps. No one raised their hand, so the sergeant told everyone to roll up their sleeve and he selected the two guys with the most hair on their arms..of which my dad was one. To view more please log in or subscribe to the digital edition
