Friendly Flat Rock, Illinois and homemade pizza pockets

I first met Gloria and Daniel Yoder back in 2011 on a hot, brutally hot, summer day in their rural southern Illinois settlement when I was working on writing Amish Cooks Across America. What struck me immediately about their community was how welcoming it was. As Gloria wrote in her column last week, each Amish settlement is different and I’ve had the chance to visit Plain communities from Maine to Montana. But  the Flat Rock, Illinois Amish settlement, while tiny, ranks among the most friendly I’ve ever been to.
