Scholarships awarded to seniors

FALMOUTH — Last Tuesday night in the Pendleton County High School gymnasium, more than $160,000 in local scholarships were awarded to 44 graduating seniors by various community businesses, organizations, and members — from banks, churches, farms, local festivals, families, PCHS alumni and the NJROTC, to name a few — and with these scholarships announced by children, youth, adults and the elderly, almost every part of the Pendleton County community was represented in the award ceremony.
“The community’s support you are about to witness through local scholarships is amazing for a community our size,” Joe Buerkley, Pendleton Country School District superintendent, said in his opening remarks. “Each year our community steps up to support our senior class and assist them in their future goals.”
More than 100 local scholarships were awarded, ranging from one-time $500 awards to four-year scholarships totaling $32,000. The money given will go towards the seniors’ college funds.
However, the scholarships represent more than just money. Many of them were personal to the presenters, especially for scholarships that were given out in memory of loved ones, such as the John Hendy FFA Memorial Scholarship which was presented by his wife, who spent a few minutes talking to the recipient on stage.
Other scholarships were given out in honor of values such as hard work, and some were awarded to seniors who would be working towards college degrees relevant to specific fields such as conservation or medicine.
Many of the scholarship recipients were repeat winners. Austin Kirsch received 10 different scholarships and Reese Barlow, Jackson Pollard and Aaron Kirsch all received seven.
Tony Dietrich, principal of PCHS, ended the night by expressing his gratitude for the support of the community towards the high school seniors.
“It’s an honor that our community can give the local scholarships that we do to our local students and that we’re able to help them in their college careers in wherever they decide to go,” Amy Hurst, who presented the William Leising III Memorial scholarship, said.
