While Jon Wirth is not exactly a new face to Pendleton County Athletics his role will be new. Wirth will take over the direction of all Pendleton County sports programs as the new Athletic Director.
Wirth was a long time fixture on the Wildcat Basketball coaching staff where he helped lead the Wildcats to the District Championship and numerous Regional appearances. Coach Wirth then moved to Campbell County where his success continued topped by three appearances in the KHSAA Sweet Sixteen.
Coach Wirth responded about returning to Pendleton County, “It’s exciting to come back in a different role, this time trying to help student-athletes and coaches in multiple sports achieve their dreams of championships.”
Wirth has been involved for many years with sports including successful coaching stints at both at Pendleton County and Campbell County. He explained how this fit into his outlook as a coach and now as an athletic director,
“I am very passionate about sports and have always wanted to do something beyond coaching.  They always say you know when it’s time to move on and after a very successful coaching career I felt like it was time. My role as the Athletic Director allows me to use my passion for sports and leadership in a different capacity.”
This will be your first time as an athletic director. What can the fans or coaches expect from Jon Wirth as athletic director?
“A Wirth ran program will be based on three areas: building positive relationships with student-athletes and staff, high expectations for performance, and giving back to the Pendleton County community.”
The initial goals an AD sets influences a school’s progam. Coach Wirth shared his,
“My main goal is to provide an outstanding athletic program as an integral part of the overall mission of Pendleton County Schools. A program that promotes participation, sportsmanship, PC Pride, and develops staff and student-athletes that represent Pendleton County Schools positively both on and off the playing field and court.”
What experiences have you had that helped prepare you for this role? It is a big step going from the bench where you are focused on one sport specifically to overseeing 12 different sports.
“Coaching is so much more than being on the sidelines. During my 27 years of coaching, I’ve been able to assist with scheduling, budgeting, fundraising, and working with administrators and boosters, just to name a few. All of these skills have helped prepare me for my new role as the Pendleton County Athletic Director.”
Coach Wirth will take over his new position starting on July 1. Between now and then he will be organizing and getting ready to take the Pendleton County program in an upwards direction.
