Robert E. Mastin, 61, Falmouth

Robert Earl Mastin, 61, of Falmouth, Ky., passed away on Sunday, December 31, 2006 at the Harrison County Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana. He was born in Robertson County on July 12, 1945, son of the late Lionel and Flosie McHatton Mastin. He was a member of the Turner Ridge Baptist Church, a United States Army veteran, and was a member of the American Legion Post 109. He married Helen Mastin and his wife survives his passing. A brother, William Mastin, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Mastin; sons, Fabian Gilbert of Falmouth, Tommy Gilbert of Independence, Levi Gilbert of Williamsburg, Ohio, and Rick Oldham of Brooksville; daughters, Judy Watson of Germantown, Bobbie Hamilton of Foster, Vivian White of Cynthiana and Kimberley Fegan of Brooksville; a brother, Lee Mastin of Falmouth; sisters, Rose Pittman of Haines City, Fla., Mae Mefford of Providence, Ky., Brenda Gilbert of Falmouth, and Mary Alice Mulkin of Cynthiana; 29 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 4, 2007 at Peoples Funeral Home in Falmouth. Interment took place in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Falmouth.

Donald Paul Smith, 60, Foster

Donald Paul Smith, 60, of Foster (Johnsville), Ky., left this world to be with the Lord on December 26, 2006.

Donald Paul married his high school sweetheart, Wilma Jean Haley Smith, on July 16, 1966, and they spent 40 years together. He was the loving father of five children, Jeanna Dawn (Michael) Jefferson, Wade Allen Smith, Haley Louise Smith, and Karlie Mae Smith, all of Bracken County. He was preceded to heaven by one daughter, Amy Lynn Smith. He was the loving Pawpaw to four grandchildren, Dillon Thomas, Andrew Lawrence, Makayla Dawn and Caleb Michael Jefferson.

He was born on May 31, 1946, to Paul J. Smith Jr. and Mildred "Louise" Peed Smith who preceded him in death. He was brother to Wanda "Sue" (Paul) Simpson of Berry and Jerry Wayne (Pauline) Smith of Foster and brother-in-law of Jimmie (Margaret) Haley of Falmouth and Marjorie Haley Mingua of Foster. He was the step-son of Margie Clos Smith of Augusta and will be greatly missed by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Upon graduation from high school, he worked at Dun & Bradstreet, Inc., in Cincinnati until May, 1966, when he entered the U.S. Army where he served his country in Vietnam as a SGT (T). Upon returning home, he worked at Rees Grocery and Service Station, which he purchased in 1989 and renamed Herman's Inc., and in 1970, he began his career with the United States Postal Service, retiring in 2001.

He was a lifelong member of Fairview Christian Church where he was an Elder and Chairman of the Board. He served as Old Pioneer Cemetery Board of Directors and Johnson Cemetery Board and as statistician for the Bracken County Polar Bears. He was a Woodmen of the World member and delegate to the Woodmen of the World National Convention in 1997 and 2005. He was bestowed the honor of Kentucky Colonel upon his retirement in 2001.

Funeral services were held at Fairview Christian Church on December 30. Serving as pallbearers were his nephews and nephew-in-laws. Honorary pallbearers were the elders and deacons of Fairview Christian Church.

Kathern Seever, 83, Butler

Kathern Seever, 83, of Butler, Ky., passed away on Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at the River Valley Nursing Home in Butler. Kathern was born in Independence, Ky., on September 20, 1923. She was the daughter of the late Alferd and Harriet Anderson Armstrong. She was a member of the Fairlane Baptist Church and was also a homemaker. She married George Seever on February 14, 1946 and her husband preceded her in death. Sisters, Margaret Oliver, Wilminia Moore, Agnes Brownfield, Dora Beard, Edith Elbert, Lena Elbert, Eunice Prather Deglow and Edna Armstrong; and brothers, Ed Armstrong, Shirley Armstrong, Virgil Armstrong, Alfred Armstrong, Claude Armstrong and Charles Armstrong also preceded her.

Survivors include sons, Dennis (Shirley) Seever of Falmouth and Barry (Debbie) Seever of Grants Lick; a daughter, Kathy (Rick) Fory of Madison, Ind.; grandchildren Melanie Hyden, Ben Seever, Allison and Nicky Fory and a great-grandchild, Katie Hyden.

Funeral services were conducted on Saturday, January 6 at the Fairlane Baptist Church in Grants Lick. Interment took place in the Butler Cemetery under the direction of Peoples Funeral Home.

Maurice Steffen, 92, Cold Spring

Maurice J. Steffen, 92, of Cold Spring, Ky., passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2007 at Carmel Manor Nursing Home in Ft. Thomas, Ky. His parents, Peter N. and Crescentia Murray Steffen, preceded him in death. He was a retired employee of Covington Catholic High School and a member of the Holy Name Society. He was a United States Army veteran, having served in World War II. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #116 and the Campbell County V.F.W. Post 3205 of Alexandria, and was a Kentucky Colonel.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva H. (Hildebrand) Steffen of Cold Spring; a son, Gary Lee Steffen of Burlington; a daughter, Nancy Anderson of Cold Spring; a brother, Raymond Steffen of Cold Spring; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 10 at the Alexandria Funeral Home, Alexandria, Ky. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Alexandria. Interment will take place in the St. Mary Catholic Church Cemetery.

Hazel Mahany, 91, Oxford

Hazel Grimes Mahany passed away on December 11, 2006, at The Knolls of Oxford in Oxford, Ohio. She was born in Falmouth, Ky., on February 5, 1915 to George and Lillian (Hobday) Grimes. Hazel attended Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky., where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. Following college, she worked as an executive secretary for Cincinnati Bell Telephone Company. She and her late husband, John Mahany, moved to Oxford in 1947 when they purchased the Stephenson Ice and Coal Company. Over the years, they transitioned this business into a successful Ace Hardware Store. She was an active member of PEO and Tri-Delta alumna group. She was preceded in death by her husband, John and her brother Kendal Grimes.

Survivors include daughters: Suzanne Tenfelder of Los Angeles, Calif. Deannie (Walt) Eaton of Acworth, Georgia, and Julie (Wil) Faubel of Woodlands, Texas; five grandchildren, Andrea Obermeier, Katie Eaton, John Faubel, Paul Faubel, and Matthew Faubel.

Funeral services were held on Monday, December 18 at Smith and Ogle Funeral Home. Interment took place in the Oxford Cemetery.

Jeffrey T. Baston, 42, Newport

Jeffrey Thomas Baston, 42, of Newport, Ky., passed away on Monday, December 25, 2006 at the St. Luke Hospital in Ft. Thomas, Ky. He was a self employed construction worker.

Survivors include his mother, Jeanne Baston of Newport; brothers Scott Baston and Jody Baston, both of Newport, Randy Baston of Independence and Terry Baston of Florida; sisters, Margo Smith and Donna Smith, both of Anderson, Ind., and Colleen Dean of Dayton, Ky.; a daughter, Misty Dawn Parton of Newport; stepdaughters Nettie Scott and Ruthie Smith, both of Newport; and four grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial was held on Friday, December 29, 2006 at The Holy Spirit Church in Newport. Cooper Funeral Home, Grant's Lick, served the family.

 

Mary Jo Perkins, 67, Alexandria

Mary Jo Brown Perkins, 67, of Alexandria, passed away on Friday, December 29, 2006 at her home. She was born on June 14, 1939, daughter of the late Earl and Emily Jo Brinker Brown. She worked at Northern Kentucky University and was a member of the Persimmon Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a son, Todd A. Perkins, on February 27, 1984.

Survivors include her husband, Michael D. Perkins of Alexandria; sons, Michael E. Perkins of Foster and Jeffrey M. Foster of Crestview Hills; daughters, Sheri L. Buckingham of Ryland Heights, Laura E. Shoulders of Independence and Amy D. Perkins of Erlanger; sisters, Judy Weisner of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio and Barbara Rawe of California; 14 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were conducted on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 at the Persimmon Grove Baptist Cemetery.
