Tim H. Phillips Memorial Marathon finishes second successful year
By Jackie Vaughn, Reporter
The second annual Tim H. Phillips Memorial Marathon for Veterans took place on Saturday, March 4. This year, a triathalon was held which truly tested the endurance of the participants. The three legs (3.67 miles apiece) of the race consisted of running with a 40-pound ruck sack, bicycling, and regular running.
A small group of runners took on the grueling eleven-mile challenge and worked their way from Wyatt's Bend Road all the way to the Hardy Mart/ Marathon station in Falmouth.
Joseph Taylor finished first for the second year in row with a time of 1 hour and 28 minutes. Chad Applegate secured a second-place finish with a time of 1 hour and 38 minutes. Bringing in third-place honors was Lesha Beaghle with a time of 1 hour and 55 minutes. They will each receive trophies for their impressive performances.
Everyone who took part in the triathalon made it to the finish line and will receive a certificate for their efforts.
This year's fund-raising event, which is held annually to honor the memory of Veteran Army Sergeant Tim H. Phillips, raised over $400 for the American Legion, Post 109.
"The sponsorship and support for the runners was very nice. We believe everyone had a great time. We'd just like to say thank you to those who helped out, supported us, or participated in the triathalon in any way. Your hard work and effort is what makes this event a success," commented sponsors, Les and Roxanna Taylor.
