The Falmouth Police Department held their annual Bicycle Rodeo for the children of the Pendleton County Summer Recreation Program at Southern Elementary on Thursday, June 28.
Forty-two children attended the popular event which featured bicycling safety lessons, the learning of hand signals, the importance of proper attire, and an obstacle course.
The children were also treated to a leisurely ride to the Pendleton Athletic Park where a Kentucky State Police Helicopter landed at the football field. They were able to view the helicopter and learn about its uses.
"This a great program and the kids love it," said Falmouth Police Sgt. Aaron Arnsperger, who initiated the Bicycle Rodeo and also instructs it. "They get to learn a lot about bicycle safety while having a good time in the process. They also get a chance to develop a name-to-name relationship with officers which helps us gain their trust and lets them know were here for them if they need us."
Later in the afternoon, the children gathered in the parking lot of Southern Elementary for a drawing for four new bicycles, two for girls and two for boys. Falmouth Police Chief Bob Scott and Falmouth Mayor April DeFalco, who donated two of the bicycles along with two from Wal-Mart, were on-hand for the presentation. Luke Nordheim and Blake Pollard were the lucky winners of the boys' bikes while Danielle Thaxton and Nicole Wolfe won the girls' bikes. Danielle Thaxton, who already had a bike, gave her new prize back for someone else to win. Nikki Lovelace's name was drawn and she was awarded the second girls' bike. Chief Scott rewarded Ms. Thaxton with a $10 bill and commended the young lady for her generosity. Steve and Christi Goins also donated bicycles and Jim Thaxton pitched in helmets for the event.
Afterwards, the group, escorted by Pendleton County Deputy Sheriff Eddie Quinn in his police cruiser, took a bicycle ride around town and back to Southern Elementary. They made a pit stop at Howard's Place for ice cream, generously donated by Mr. Hoess, and also stopped at the courthouse for drinks. The kids had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed the Bicycle Rodeo once again this year.
"I can't thank Sgt. Arnsperger and the Falmouth Police Department enough," said Nancy Short, Director of Pendleton County Summer Recreation. "He goes above and beyond the call of duty to make this a fun day for everyone involved. The kids love it and I love it too. This is the biggest day of the year for the Recreation Program and the kids get a lot out of this program. I'd also like to thank everyone else who donated or played a part in making this event a success."
