Bertram discusses discount prescription drug card
Purchase of Tackett property approved by court
By Roger McKinney, Reporter
In the October 24 meeting of the fiscal court, Judge/ Executive, Henry Bertram, informed the magistrates that a discount prescription drug card would soon be made available to Pendleton County citizens through the Kentucky Association of Counties, or (KACo). This organization is an insurance company, which provides coverage to county governments. By presenting this card to participating pharmacists a Pendleton County citizen will be able to save up to 22% on his or her prescription drugs. Judge Bertram said the cards should be available in eight weeks. (for additional information visit www.kaco.org).
Judge Bertram told the court that the Pendleton County Justice Center Development Board had voted to build the new courthouse as a one story structure. This choice would make the building easier to heat and cool. It would also save money by excluding the installation of three elevators. Unfortunately, a one story structure occupied more ground area and limited the number of parking spaces. The Development Board had talked to Charles and Linda Tackett about purchasing additional land in order to solve this dilemma. Previously, the Tacketts had agreed to sell their property at the appraised value of $40,000 per acre, but because the extra land had Elm Street frontage, Mr. and Mrs. Tackett wanted $50,000 for that particular tract. Deputy County Court Clerk, Darlene Smeal, read aloud, correspondence from Development Board Attorney, Jeff Dean, which advised Judge Bertram that the purchase of the Tackett property at a price beyond the appraised value was proper. Attorney Dean based this counsel on a legal precedence, which he cited in his letter.

Two car collision injures one on Hwy 177 near city of Butler
By Jackie Vaughn, Reporter
A two-car collision on Highway 177 sent a Pendleton County man to the hospital on Wednesday, October 25.
Manley Said, 82, Butler, operating a 1996 Geo Metro, was traveling west into the city of Butler around 4:50 p.m.
According to Tommy Kiser, 44, Olive Hill, who was operating a 1996 Dodge Ram pick-up truck for SJ Cox Enterprises and traveling in the opposite direction, Said was swerving back and forth across the double yellow line. Kiser stated that he thought the man was trying to avoid potholes in the road. He had almost come to a compete stop when Said struck him in the left front fender.
Both vehicles were damaged very severely. Kiser's truck suffered left front end damage while Said's vehicle was smashed in from the left front end to the door. Said was unable to get out of the car until members of the Butler Fire Department could arrive and extract him from the wreckage. The drivers door had to be removed to free the man.
Members of the Pendleton County Ambulance Service, Kentucky State Police, Butler Police Department, and Pendleton County Sheriff's Department also responded to the emergency call. Deputy Sheriff Craig Peoples was in charge of the accident scene.
Cynda Barton, Lawrenceburg, Indiana, a witness to the accident, stated that she was following Said's white Geo and he was swerving all over the road. She told police that the truck tried to avoid the collision and believed the driver of the Geo might have been intoxicated or had some other problem which was controlling his driving.
Said advised emergency crew members that he did not know he was driving or that he had even been in an accident. He was taken to St. Luke Hospital East and treated for his injuries. His current condition was unknown as of presstime.
The roadway was closed for over an hour to investigate the scene and get the debris from the accident cleaned up. The roadway reopened at 6 p.m.

Falmouth City Council considers Comprehensive Plan
By Roger McKinney, Reporter
Pendleton County Planning Commission Attorney, Tim Thiesson, addressed the Falmouth City Council regarding the 2006 updating of the Comprehensive Plan. Attorney Thiesson explained that Lexington Planning Consultant, Steve Austin, had recently made the Comprehensive Plan more current by redrafting its goals and objectives. Mr. Thiesson briefly discussed the plan with
the city lawmakers. Councilwoman Mary Ann Pittman said, some of the goals and objectives were inappropriate and did not pertain well to the city of Falmouth. Mayor Gene Flaugher told Attorney Thiesson that the council would continue to discuss the plan and make recommendations to the Pendleton County Planning Commission at a later date.
Other business conducted by the Falmouth City Council in the October 19 meeting:
Attorney Henry Watson III, discussed a Public Service Commission letter to the city, that requested information regarding Falmouth's proposed rate increases to the water districts. Attorney Watson recommended that a teleconference be set up with Public Service Commission representatives in order to determine what information the PCS required.
Falmouth Citizen, Pete Price, talked to the council regarding the repair of sewer lines to one of his rental properties. Sewage was backing up in the basement and Mr. Price had paid Jolly Plumbing to correct the problem. Now, he wanted to know if he could be reimbursed by the city. After a lengthy discussion council agreed to pay for the repair, but approved a motion that stated, in the future all sewage line repairs must be preapproved by the Falmouth City Council before reimbursement can take place.
A motion was approved that raises the starting salaries of city workers from $7.50 to $9 per hour.
A Municipal Road Aid Resolution was approved that secures blacktopping funds for the surfacing of passageways in the Pendleton Athletic Park.
