Annual Bicycle Rodeo combines safety and fun

By Jackie Vaughn, Reporter

Approximately 30 kids and 15 adults from the Pendleton County Summer Recreation Program took part in the Bicycle Rodeo at Southern Elementary on Wednesday, July 2.

The Bicycle Rodeo is an annual event which features bicycling safety lessons, the teaching of hand signals, the importance of proper bicycling safety attire, and an obstacle course. Falmouth Police Sgt. Aaron Arnsperger started the event several years ago and continues to be the driving force behind its success.

"It's important to have one on one contact with the kids," said Sgt. Arnsperger. "I really get a chance to know them while providing valuable bicycling tips that will help keep them safe. This helps build a relationship between them and myself. It lets them know that they can trust and confide in an officer and that we're here for them if they need us. Besides that, the Bicycle Rodeo is a lot of fun and the kids really seem to enjoy it."

Sgt. Arnsperger and Mayor April DeFalco donated two new bicycles, one for a boy and one for a girl, to the event The kids' names were put in a hat and randomly drawn to decide the lucky winners. The recipient of the girl's bike was Tori Fitzpatrick while Taylor Maxwell received the boy's bike.

The kids also took a police escorted, afternoon bike ride through Falmouth. They made a couple of stops along the way, breaking at the courthouse for drinks and refreshments and then at Howard's Place for ice cream. This was the conclusion to another successful year for the valuable, bicycle safety program.

"The Bicycle Rodeo is the highlight of the summer recreation program. It's the one event that all the kids look forward to," said Nancy Short, director of the Pendleton County Summer Recreation Program.
