Falmouth woman arrested in connection with Tri-State pharmacy robberies
Boone County Sheriff's Department investigators have drawn up warrants on a local man and woman believed to have robbed the Walton Pharmacy on Sunday, November 18, 2007. The two were arrested in Onalaska, Wisconsin on December 6 after they robbed a drug store there and led police on a high speed pursuit in a snow storm.
Detective Rob Duncan executed two warrants for Robbery, 1st degree warrants for Gregory Chasteen, 26 of Cincinnati, Ohio and Erin Moore, 26 of Falmouth, Kentucky. Both are currently being held in La Crosse, Wisconsin in lieu of $50,000 bond each. The Boone County warrants will act as holders until they make bond or their cases are adjudicated. They will then face extradition to Kentucky. Robbery, 1st degree is a Class B felony, punnishable by 10-20 years in the state penitentiary.
Chasteen reportedly admitted to Wisconsin authorities their involvement in three (3) pharmacy robberies in Northern Kentucky: Walton, Crescent Springs, and Highland Heights. He said the two of them were
enroute to the Seattle, Washington area because of the media attention generated in the tri-state area. The car they were driving matched the description of the small-body Cadillac one of the witnesses saw them fleeing from the Walton Pharmacy robbery in.

Three injured in two-vehicle accident on old 3L Highway
Kentucky State Trooper Mark Grisik investigated a two-vehicle, injury accident around 3:45 p.m. on Friday, December 14. Michael Pugh, 45, Falmouth, operating a 2001 Dodge dually pick-up truck, was traveling northbound on Old 3L Highway when he crossed the centerline and went into the path of oncoming traffic. He struck the vehicle of Pam Bruin, 59, Falmouth, operating a 2004 Dodge Dakota, who was traveling southbound. According to police reports, Mr. Pugh had reached down to pick something up and didn't realize that he had drifted into the other lane. Mrs. Bruin had two grandchildren with her at the time of the accident, Ashley, 6, and Christopher, 9. All three were wearing their seatbelts but still sustained injuries. Pendleton and Harrison county EMT's were dispatched to administer first aid at the accident scene. Christopher suffered a laceration to his forehead and two tears in his small intestine. He was aircared to Children's Hospital in Cincinnati while Ashley was transported there by family. Mrs. Bruin was driven to St. Luke East by family to be checked for injuries. Mr. Pugh was uninjured in the wreck. As of press time, Christopher was still in the hospital and will be until at least Saturday. Article and photo by Jackie Vaughn.

State Police arrest former teacher in rape case
Detective Jeremy Murrell of Kentucky State Police Post 6 has arrested a Nicholas County woman on charges of six counts of Rape 3rd degree.
Crystal D. Wells, 33, of 438 N. Broadway St., Carlisle, Ky, was arrested at 11:33 a.m. Tuesday, December 11 at the Scott County Jail. Wells turned herself in without incident in response to an indictment warrant from Robertson County.
The indictment stems from a State Police investigation into allegations that Wells engaged in a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old Robertson County boy. Post 6 was notified on November 11 by family members of the 15-year-old victim. Family members of the boy found text messages on his phone which indicated the possibility of an inappropriate relationship and subsequently learned of both text and verbal communications which they felt were indicative of a sexual relationship. Subsequent investigation indicated that Wells had engaged in sexual intercourse with the boy on six occasions during a period from August 2007 through November 2007. It was also indicated that Wells had provided a cellular telephone to the youth in order to facilitate communication during the relationship.
Wells was employed as a teacher at Deming School in Robertson County and the victim is a student there, however, investigation has revealed no instances of inappropriate physical contact on school grounds or property. All indications are that the liaisons were conducted in Wells' vehicle or in privately owned locations.
Rape 3rd degree is defined by Kentucky Law as when a person is: Being twenty-one (21) years old or more, he or she engages in sexual intercourse with another person less than sixteen (16) years old. Rape 3rd degree is a class D felony punishable by a maximum sentence of 5 years imprisonment and a fine of up to $10,000.

Tips, tales and mountain trails

Graduates of the Kentucky Entrepreneurial Coaches Institute are referred to as Fellows. Every spring and fall Ron Hustedde, Director of the Institute, plans a reunion for the Fellows. Of course the reunions give us time to reconnect and learn from each other. But more than that the reunions are updates on what is happening in the world of small business. So the planning team at UK brings together the best speakers and most knowledgeable people in the nation to teach us more about entrepreneurship and small business.
In November, we gathered at the Maysville convention center to hear about national work. One speaker was Michael Shuman, author of "The SmallMart Revolution: How Small Businesses Can Beat the Global Competition". Shuman argues that locally owned businesses are the main source of prosperity for a community. At a time when communities are experiencing economic hardship due to the outsourcing of jobs, his research offers a solution with refreshing relevancy. Corporate decisions to move operations abroad or to another state have cost US workers and communities some 75 million jobs since the early 1970s. Shuman's alternative to chasing after the big guys is to (re)build self reliant, locally owned, community committed business networks, which turn out to be much more reliable generators of good jobs, tax revenues, community wealth, sustainable economic development, charitable contributions and social stability.
Shuman supports buying local and by that he means nurturing locally owned businesses that use local resources in a sustainable way, employ local workers at decent wages, and serve primarily local consumers. It means becoming more self-sufficient and less dependent on imports.
We learned from Shuman that small businesses probably can't compete in a price war with the huge conglomerates; they must find a niche, something that the larger stores don't offer and they need to keep it local.
Russ Conrad is an entrepreneur and a KECI Fellow from Pendleton County. He will tell you that he owns a Hardware store.
Russ, Melony Furby, KECI fellow from Mason County, and I shared a table at the November KECI Reunion. Russ listened intently to Michael Shuman's advice about finding a niche and offering something to the local community that large stores don't have. All Russ told us that day was "I'm going to try something." Then one day this message came from Russ.
