Charles was a graduate of the Class of 1962 at Falmouth High School, and held Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Agriculture from Murray State University and the University of Kentucky. His teaching career began in 1967 at Bracken County High School where he served for 27 years as the agriculture teacher and an FFA adviser, mentoring hundreds of students through competitive events and teaching a variety of vocational skills. After retiring in 1994, Charles filled the position of agriculture teacher at Pendleton High School for one semester in 2005. He encouraged both male and female students to strive for excellence, with his livestock and dairy judging teams excelling in state and national events. His FFA Chapters had a long history of accomplishments with many students serving in regional and state leadership positions. He practiced the FFA Motto: “Learning to do; Doing to learn; Earning to live; Living to serve.”
After his retirement from teaching, he continued to advise regularly and share his agriculture knowledge with neighbors, former students and friends. His greatest love was raising his purebred Angus cattle, operating the farm equipment, harvesting the hay, growing tobacco and working with his two sons on the family farm.
Charles was a former member of the Bracken County Soil Conservation District Board, the Bracken County Ag Development Council, and he served a term on the Kentucky Beef Council. He was a founding and active member of the Kentucky and Bracken County Beef Cattle Association. He held membership in the Bracken County Retired Teachers Association and has been an active member of Willow Baptist Church, serving as moderator for many years.
He will be remembered for his love of family, his keen sense of humor, his kind demeanor, his belief in hard work and taking care of the land. His legacy will be these words: Faith, Family, Farming and FFA.
