The deep impulses of mother love on Sunday afternoon led a frail woman into flaming runs of her home near Fiskburg to rescue her children who were in the burning structure.
Twice in succession, this heroic woman plunged into the house, the first time to rescue her 2-year-old son, the second time to snatch her 15 months old babe.
The elder child was saved, but the babe was lost, for the mother was overcome by the intense heat before she could reach the flaming bed upon which the babe lay.
And in her second attempt at rescue, the woman lost her own life. She sacrificed herself for her child.
The tragedy happened at 2 p.m. Sunday in the home of Glenn Elmore near Fiskburg, a village about 17 miles north of Falmouth on the LLL Highway.
