25 Years Ago -September 29, 1998

Pendleton County Fiscal Court at their Sept. 23 meeting approved Judge/Executive Don Mays' request to purchase two pieces of property that will be a part of the expansion of the present jail on Chapel Street....One property belonging to Stella Richards is being purchased at the cost of $85,000 with the stipulation Mrs. Richards be able to remove anything she chooses out of the building before it is demolished. ...A second property belonging to Paul Duncan, a two-story structure two doors down Chapel Street from the jail is priced at $22,000. A third property discussed was the dry cleaning business owned by Jim and Alta Hamilton has been priced at $90,000 for a building and its contents. The owners are committed to offering a proof of clean soil before this transaction can be completed.

Groundbreaking ceremonies were held Sept. 24 in Falmouth for the Ace Hardware that will be built on Wilson Street.

Pendleton County Schools will be dismissed at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, in order that school officials, teachers, etc., can attend the funeral for Carmen Moorehead, a teacher at the Phillip A. Sharp Middle School.

 

50 Years Ago - September 28, 1973

The murder trail of Raymond Aulick last Tuesday and Wednesday resulted in a hung jury. Mr. Aulick had been charged in the willful murder of shooting Earl Gillespie on Jan 14, 1973. Circuit Judge John P. Lair presided over the case.

Forty-seven members of the Pendleton High School Marching Band are busily engaged in preparations for their first-ever marching competition.

 

75 Years Ago - October 1, 1948

Falmouth handed Grant's Lick a stunning setback Sunday afternoon at the Fair Grounds by defeating them 2 to 0 behind the one-hit pitching of Allen Flaugher, Falmouth's left-handed hurler....Manager Bill Cordray reports that a total 502 paid admissions in the grounds were received.

Chief Engineer Ed Davis and City Electrician Russell King, along with other city employees, restored Falmouth's electric supply as quickly as possible last Tuesday. The cause of the electric failure was due to one of the phases in one of the big engines at the utility plant being out.

The floor in the foot bridge over Metcalfe Ford at Demossville has about been completed, according to Madison Martin, county road engineer.

A Mr. Ballinger from Frankfort was rushed to St. Elizabeth Hospital last Wednesday morning in the C. B. Peoples and Son ambulance where it was found he was suffering with a broken back. Mr. Ballinger was one of several men painting the bridge over the Main Licking River in Falmouth. He fell from the top of the structure to the concrete floor, breaking his back. 

 

100 Years Ago -September 29, 1923

A Ford touring car was stolen from the Falmouth fairgrounds on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 22. The car is described as follows: Motor N. 5135044, Ky; license No. 64490, two Hartford cord tires on rear wheels, Firestone fabric tire on right front wheel, U.S. tire on the left front wheel, starter, demountable rims, no tire on extra rim.

Lucius and Dan Miller, of near Caddo, have a pear tree on their farm, with three large yellow pumpkins hanging from the limbs. This is the largest fruit any pear tree ever produced in Pendleton.

Lucius and Dan Miller, two of our scientific farmers and fruit growers, of near Caddo, left at our office 10 ears of white and red corn, which is the finest we have ever seen grown in Pendleton County. They also left two stalks of corn with us that have two eleven-inch ears on each stalk. Miller Bros. Say that there are numerous stalks of this kind in their corn field, which will make years than 65 bushels to the acre.

G. F. Barnard & Sons, well-known breeders of registered Shorthorn stock, cleaned up on beef cattle on the fair this year. They won the following premiums: Best Cow, 1st and 2nd; best heifer any age, 1st; best bull under three  years, 2nd; sweepstakes bull, 1st; sweepstakes cow, 1st, best herd, 1st.

J. E. Zempter, who owns a fine farm out on the Cynthiana Pike,won first premium on Mango peppers. Mr. Zempter presented the Outlook with some of these choice peppers.

Oral Lowe, of Morgan, has a famous race pony which won the race in the one-half mile pony race Saturday at the fair. The Low pony ran the track in one minute and six seconds, which is believed to be the pony record.
