25 Years Ago -August 12, 1998

The long-awaited moment for both property owners and the city of Falmouth took place August 6 when the first check was given out on the buyout properties there.

Pendleton County Fiscal Court members voted 5-1 Monday morning in a special meeting to proceed with building the new 125-bed jail facility downtown on the present site.

Kincaid Regional Theatre producing artistic director Charles Kondek has announced the Kincaid Regional Theatre will host a portion of the Cinergy Collection, works of art by 20 Northern Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana artists including painting, drawing, metalwork, sculpture, and photography.

Holding his first meeting as the newly-appointed fire chief of the Falmouth Fire Department, Chief Marty Hart laid down some new rules and discussed some old ones.

 

50 Years Ago - August 10, 1973

Pendleton County Hospital Board met Tuesday, July 24, at the hospital for their regular meeting. The board elected Frank Harris as their chairman, Dr. C. A. Waldemayer as their Vice-Chairman, Hall Sharon, Treasurer, and Mrs. Lorraine Conrad, Secretary.

Plans were announced Friday for Expansion of the Black River Mining Company at Carntown in Pendleton County, Ky. An agreement with the Jones and Laughlin Steel Corp., Pittsburgh, to buy in also was disclosed.

The Falmouth Little League is sponsoring its annual Labor Day Softball Tournament at the Falmouth Playground on Labor Day weekend, beginning Friday, August 31st, and Saturday, September 1st, Sunday September 2nd, and Monday, September 3rd. Tom Purday and Harry Roberts will again be managers.

D. Dennis Merril Aldridge, President of Clear Creek School, Pineville, Ky, will be the principal speaker at the 103rd annual meeting of the Beech Grove Sunday School Celebration and Picnic at Mentor Saturday, Aug. 18 at the evening session.

Atlanta's Hank Aaron doffed his cap to the crowd Saturday night after hitting the 700th home run of his career.

 

75 Years Ago - August 13, 1948

Floyd Wills of Near Morgan was in Falmouth Tuesday displaying a Hickory Horned  Devil which he found near his barn. County Agent Robert White identified it for him.

Ben F. Wolfe, one of Pendleton County's respected citizens and retired farmers, received his 25-year pin Friday night in services at Orion Lodge No. 222, F. & A.M. The presentation was made by W. H. Bentle, past master of the Judge.

Melvin Hart of Falmouth has arranged for Mrs. Elizabeth Saylor, home economics consultant of the International Harvester Co., to present a demonstration of Frozen Food Facts at the Falmouth High School cafeteria Monday, August 6.

The Pendleton County Board of Education met in regular session on Monday, August 2, and tentatively placed the teachers, drivers and janitors. Schools will open September 6 at 9 a.m. fast time.

 

100 Years Ago - August 10, 1923

At a mass meeting held Monday evening to arrange for funeral services here of our late President Warren G. Harding. Norman Bowman was elected chairman; J.A. Woodhead, secretary; C. N. Johnson and Elmer Woodhead appointed to secure speaker; James Smith to erect a speaker's stand; Place--around the flag pole, if weather is fair; in court house if it rains; Time--Friday at 3 p.m.

To the People of Falmouth and Community: our president is dead. A Divine Providence has taken a great and good man to his reward. The nation has lost a wise leader, and every citizen a true friend.

My Dear Postmaster: I have been ordered by the Postmaster General to notify you that as a further mark of respect to the memory of the late President, all United States Post Offices will be closed for one hour, from three to four o'clock, during the exercises  attendant upon the burial of the late President at Marion, Ohio, on Friday, August 10, 1923.

C. N. McCarty and other progressive citizens of the north end of the county have made a deal with the Pendleton Fiscal Court to advance the money to pay for the survey of the Washington Trace Road from Lenoxburg to the Campbell County line. The money is to be refunded to the citizens when the road bonds are sold.

Falmouth defeated the strong Augusta team at the fair grounds park Sunday afternoon in a score of 4 to 3. Martin pitched for Falmouth and Bellars for Augusta.

The Common School Commencement exercises will take place at the Duncan Theater on Friday night, August 17th. The largest class in the history of the county will be given sheep skins that night. These graduates come from every section of the county, and the most of them will enter high school this fall. The two county high schools at Falmouth and Butler will be taxed to take care of them.
