Pendleton County Disaster Emergency Services Director Craig Peoples hosted a disaster and recovery slide presentation of the Great Flood of 1997 for a five-member delegation from Ecuador on April 2.
Karla Burlew, an outreach worker with Homeward Bound Runaway Shelter, met with David Bay, owner of BB’s Superstore, located in Falmouth and BB’s Food Mart in Butler, and the stores’ managers at Licking Valley Oil, on U.S. 27, April 1 to discuss a project known as Safe Place which provides a place for youths to have somewhere to go that they can feel safe while help is enlisted for them.
Falmouth Mayor Max Goldbeg lunched at Diana’s Restaurant on West Shelby Street Friday with visitor Ted Theis of the Falmouth, MA area.
50 Years Ago - April 6, 1973
Approximately 200 Pendleton County citizens attended a mass meeting for Pendleton County Hospital at the courthouse in Falmouth Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. The meeting got underway about 1 p.m. and was concluded by about 3 p.m. During this time, many testimonies were given as to what was wrong with the hospital concerning administration and doctors.
Dr. Robert L. McKenney, a lifelong resident of Falmouth, explained the demands and said the group of which he is a member thinks Mrs. Palmer [administrator at that time] has given away her powers to the hospital surgeon, Dr. Isaac Valencia.
75 Years Ago - April 2, 1948
The shortage of coal has forced the city of Falmouth to have a Williamstown trucker bring it in from truck mines in Jackson County in order to keep the utility plant in operation. The city is paying $8.50 per ton, which is more than it usually pays for normal sources.
The Junior Chamber of Commerce here in Pendleton County and the Welfare Department of the Falmouth Woman’s Club are sponsoring a tuberculosis x-ray clinic here in Falmouth on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 6 and 7.
A birth was published last week by this newspaper in good faith, and has proven to be false. A signed article was sent to us announcing the birth of twins in Mr. and Mrs. Merrill Dawson. This is absolutely false and without fact.
Eugene Rose, who has been with the Pressman Department Stores for about 15 years, returned to his old job last week as manager of the Falmouth Store.
100 Years Ago - April 6, 1923
The Board of Education of the Williamstown Public Schools let the contract Monday for the erection of a new brick school building at that place. Orla Nelson, well-known contractor of this city, was the lowest and secured the contract for $41,875.
The Falmouth High School Alumni Association met at the house of Dr. and Mrs. C. F. Cornelius Tuesday evening, March 27. The meeting was called for the purpose of making preliminary arrangements for the Alumni Banquet which will be held Friday evening, May 18th.
Friday, March 20th, closed the present school year at Murphy school.
Mr. H. H. Mains and Thomas Bell, contract carpenters, are building a three-room cottage for Mrs. J. W. Whalen on her block of lots in the sub-division south of town.
