Service International returned to Falmouth for its fourth visit in spite of cancellation and extreme winter weather in the county.
A surprise winter storm dumped 21 inches of snow on the county, closing schools and snowing in many who work either north or south of the city.
Ms. Morag Adlon of the Northern KY Area Development District talked to council about the buyout at the February 2 Butler City Council meeting.
Bev Wright opened her shop, A Head of Times Beauty Salon, in Wyatt’s Riverside Shop. She had had her shop in her home before the March 1997 Flood.
David Richie found a set of crutches in a tree in front of his house at 514 Pendleton Street. The crutches were apparently caught in between some branches of a tree during the March 1997 flood.
50 Years Ago - February 9, 1973
The 38th District Basketball drawings were held Sunday afternoon at Pendleton High School. Pendleton County has drawn Bracken County in the tournament.
The Butler Fire Department was called on January 30 at 9 p.m. to the Rickett home on Crowley Road in Butler to extinguish a fire. Upon arriving, the interior was completely in flames. There was no one living in the house at the time of the fire, and damage was extensive to the interior.
At approximately 2:30 p.m. Friday, the Butler Fire Department was called to Grassy Creek to assist in transporting an ill baby. Kentucky State Police called Capt. Larry McClanahan to the Butler Firehouse to bring his jeep to the scene due to high water on Mullins Road. Once they had the seven-week-old child and her mother, they met the Pendleton County Life squad at the end of the road, and they were transported to Pendleton County Hospital.
Dr. Isaac Valencial announces he is opening his office for the general practice of medicine, obstetrics, and surgery at 400 Main Street, Falmouth, the Farm Bureau building. Hours will be by appointment, and the office will be closed Fridays.
The Northern Pendleton County Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire call January 25, 1973, on State Route 10 approximately eight miles south of Peach Grove. On fire was a tractor-trailer rig owned by Robert Jenkins of Butler, KY. The fire was extinguished, saving the motor and chassis.
Many Kentucky farmers are running short of hay to feed their cattle this winter. With several more weeks of winter feeding still ahead, hay is selling at record prices in some areas.
The Bracken County Polar bears defeated the Wildcats in a thrilling Homecoming game Saturday, February 3.
75 Years Ago - February 6, 1948
Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated Friday, January 30, at his home at New Delhi, India, by a Hindu extremist who had long opposed Gandhi’s efforts to bring peace and reconciliation to the warring camps of Hindu and Muslim.
Falmouth now has a Class 1A airport, completing all requirements, according to Jerry O’Brien, executive secretary of the Kentucky Aeronautics Association meeting here in Falmouth at the LLL Restaurant last Friday night. At the same time, a new NAA Chapter was formed in Falmouth with 22 charter members: Kenneth T. Marquette, Wallace Mains, Marvin Rankin, Warren Shonert, George Schanding, Carl Stith, Paul Ashcraft, W. A. Caldwell, George Ashcraft, George House, Allie Tucker, Leland Barnes, Lucian Craig, Ray Cookendoerfer, Harold Ewing, Keith Fisher, Donald Barnes, William Hopkins, Clarence Rice, Clark Houchen, Joe Kelly, H. R. Best, Charles Clifford, Lawrence Colvin, Marvin Davis, C. A. Taliaferro, Ralph Perrin, Shirley McCarty, J. C. Keller, R. A. Thompson, George Malcomb, and Max Goldberg.
The directors of the Pendleton County Farm Bureau, cooperating with the county agent, met Wednesday to lay plans for a county-wide rat extermination drive.
The Morgan Raiders will come to Falmouth next Tuesday night, February 13, to meet the Red Devils in a return engagement. Morgan has previously defeated Falmouth this season.
100 Years Ago - February 9, 1923
The Farmers’ Union general store opened for business in this city Saturday and started off under the most favorable conditions....George Barnett,, the manager, is being assisted by James Wiggins and Misses Stella Dougherty and Irene Moore.
I was notified by phone last Thursday by a law-abiding citizen that small pox existed in the family of Lewis Daniels. I went to the gentleman’s home and one mild case of the disease in the family consisting of eight persons was found. They were notified to call a physician and be vaccinated. A small pox flag was placed in full view of the road on the front of the dwelling.~H. C. Clark, Health Officer.
Mrs. Philip Schreck, one of our good farmer ladies of near Carntown, has a flock of 17 Buff Orpington hens, which have made a good egg record. They laid 29 dozen eggs in the month of December, making an average of better than 20 eggs per hen. The same hens in January laid 25 dozen eggs.
For the first time this winter, Pendleton County is covered with a blanket of snow, and the weather is ranging from eight to 25 above zero. We have had fine weather all winter, and this snow does not fit this late in the season; however, the snow is said to be good for small grain.
