25 Years Ago - April 1996

    Just 4 Kids is a new business that just recently opened in town next to McDonald’s. It is owned by Amy Barnes and Robin Handloser. It is a resale shop where nearly new clothing is brought in and put on the racks to be sold. They also purchase new merchandise to be sold in the shop.
    Quail Unlimited to hold banquet on April 27 at Kincaid Park. It will be held in the multi-purpose building and doors will open at 6 p.m.
    The Historical Society recently placed two government furnished headstones for veterans in local cemeteries. One of these was for Pvt. John A. Fornash who served in the Union Army during the Civil War. His headstone was placed in the Locust Grove Cemetery along State Route 22. The other was for Solomon Belew, a private in the 2nd Virginia Regiment during the Revolutionary War. This stone was placed in the Smith Cemetery on State Route 467.
    The long awaited new Farm Bill signed into law April 4 by President Clinton will allow farmers to make planting decisions unfettered by government mandates for the first time in decades. The new bill is called the FAIR (Federal Agricultural Improvement and Reform) Act.
    Derby Weekend Benefit Dance to be held at the Pendleton County Fairgrounds with music provided by Gradual Taylor Band. All proceeds will go to the maintenance of the Crest Hills Cemetery.

    Melvin Roscoe Dennie, son of Melvin and Faye Claypool Dennie, was born in Falmouth on January 11, 1947 and passed away Saturday, April 3, 1971. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War.
    Mr. Jackson  (Jack) Gosney, 79 years old of Butler, passed away April 5, 1971. He was a Pendleton County farmer and World War I veteran.
    Mrs. Monta Lee Pribble, aged 91 years, a native of Pendleton County, passed away Tuesday, March 30, 1971.
    Richard A. Fossett, a former resident of Peach Grove, passed away March 30, 1971.
    Frank Gray, 77, a native of Pendleton County, passed away Saturday, April 3, 1971, at his place of employment.
    William M. Justice, aged 71, of Morningview, passed away Sunday, April 4, 1971.

75 Years Ago - April 1946

    Mrs. Anne Margaret Fisk, member of one of the oldest pioneer families in Northern Kentucky, passed away Thursday, March 28, 1946, at her home.
    John A. Verner one of Falmouth’s best known citizens was born August 11, 1863 and peacefully passed to his eternal reward on March 31, 1946.
    The draft board has released the following names of men who have been discharged from the armed forces: Charles Albert Stilwell, Butler; Willis Earl Lovelace, Butler; Roy Junior Burlew, Butler; Charles Wilson Peoples, Butler; Lawrence Joseph Sipple, Falmouth; Joseph Edward Elliott, Falmouth; Bennie Russell Watson, Falmouth; Lindsay Parker Wyatt, Falmouth and Charles Ridgeway Dougherty, Falmouth.
    Michael Coleman, aged 77 years, a native of Pendleton County and a resident of Falmouth since about 1920, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 1946.
    Bert Bonar, aged 78 years, a resident of Caddo, passed away at Jewish Hospital, Cincinnati, Monday, April 1, 1946.
    The stork called at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Baker on February 17, 1946 and presented them with a fine little son weighing seven pounds, one ounce, whom they named James Leroy.

100 Years Ago - April 1921

    George Edward Woolery, son of James and Sarah A. Woolery, was born on January 21, 1853, near Antioch Mills in Pendleton County and passed away at his home in Covington on March 26, 1921.
    Mrs. Charlotte Purdy, aged about 70 years, beloved wife of A. B. Purdy of Butler, passed away Friday last at the home of her daughter.
    Mrs. Brazilla Jett passed away at her home on Sunday April 3.
    Born to the wife of Ashland Ballinger of this city on Easter Sunday, March 27, a fine little daughter, Katherine Fern.
    The death angel has again visited our community and taken from our midst one of our best citizens, Joseph Vater, aged 88 years.
    Lorenzo Doud, aged 79 years, passed away March 17 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Caldwell.
