Tornado rips through northern part of county destroying house and car. J. C. Beckett, 91, had his two story brick home ripped apart and said of the event, “I’ve never seen a tornado in all my years and I don’t care if I ever see another one.” Mr. Beckett was sitting in his kitchen when a strong wind blew through the house and blew him up against the wall knocking him semiconscious. Grassy Creek Christian Church also had its steeple blown off.
The State Farm office has been kept busy as they have received over 135 auto claims for hail damage from the storm on May 4. Bob Neises, claim adjustor, said, “We are averaging around 34 estimates per day at the local office here in town.”
Patrick Clore has been hired as new Pendleton County School Superintendent. Clore is a former assistant superintendent at Harlan County Schools. Clore has coached football, track and basketball. He has served as teacher/coach, principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent over the span of his career so far.
3 on 3 Heat on the Hill basketball tournament will be held Saturday at the Pendleton County High School gym. Divisions from fifth grade through 35 and over will be formed. All teams will receive shirts while winner and runner ups will receive trophies. Adult division winners will also receive gift certificates from Randy’s Clothing and Footwear. The event is being sponsored by the Pendleton County Chamber of Commerce and the Pendleton County Athletic Boosters.
McDonald’s introduces its newest hamburger the Arch Deluxe. The Arch Deluxe was created for adults it has a quarter pound of beef, iceberg lettuce, tomato, American cheese, slivers of Spanish onions, a special Arch Deluxe sauce and ketchup all on a fresh homade taste potato bun. Customers also have the option of adding hickory smoked pepper to the sandwich.
50 Years Ago - May 1971
William R. Cookendorfer is building a new apartment house on Ridgeway Ave., U.S. 27 in Falmouth. The apartment building will be a colonial brick, air conditioned, have wall to wall carpeting, and be modern in every aspect.
Canonero II scored a startling upset at the 97th running of the Kentucky Derby at Louisville Saturday. He paid $19.40, $8, and $4.40.
Butler Wash-N-Dry, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Mullins, Butler, owners, announce the grand opening of their new business in Butler on Saturday, May 8.
Fred Conrad Casey of Campton, Ky., formerly of Falmouth, was found dead about5 p.m. on Monday, May 10, 1971, near his home at Campton. He had been missing since December.
Mrs. Temple McDowell, aged 62 years, of Oakland, passed away Saturday, May 8, 1971

Born to the wife of J. W. Cordray on Sunday, April 28, 1946, a fine little daughter at the St. Elizabeth Hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Browning have been entertaining an eight and one half pound baby daughter at their home at the fairgrounds since April 20. She will answer to the name of Marcella Kay.
Mr. and Mrs. Alva Powell of the Brooksville Road are receiving congratulations on the arrival of a fine seven pund, eight ounce daughter, born April 24, 1946, at the Harrison Memorial Hospital. She will answer to the name Neva Sue.
Desda Wainscott, wife of Jasper Wainscott, was born February 19, 1900 passed away at her home.
Mrs. Mollie Conrad, aged 84 years, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M. C. Fisher on Tuesday April 23, 1946.
100 Years Ago - May 1921
A fatal accident occurred on Concord Pike near the home of Otis Allender, three miles north of Falmouth, Monday morning, when a car driven by James Courtney and occupied by his mother, Mrs. Daisy Owens, Mrs. Claude Glenn and J. C. Fields, went over a steep embankment and turned over several times with the occupants in the car. The party was enroute to Falmouth. Mrs. Glenn was killed.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bush of Grassy Creek have been entertaining a fine little daughter at their home since April 13, 1921. This is the third heir. The little Miss has been named Laura Velma.
Born to the wife of D. M. Wilkins, state road engineer, of this city, at a hospital in Lexington on May 3, a fine little daughter.
Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Wolfe are entertaining a new daughter at their home. The little Miss will be known as Geneva Ruth.
