25 Years Ago - March, 1996

    On the second Sunday of March 1954, a young boy of nine attended Mrs. Ruth Miller’s Sunday School class at the Falmouth Christian Church. Sunday March 10 She presented a pin representing 42 years of perfect attendance in Sunday school to that boy, now a man of 51, Teddy Wilson. Hallie Hart assisted with the presentation. Mrs. Hart was Teddy’s third Sunday School teacher.
    Rick Elrod was inducted into the 10th Region Hall of Fame on March 20. A 1978 graduate of Pendleton County High School was a three year starter and averaged 15 ppg, 9 rpg as a junior and 21 ppg, 17 rpg as a senior. He received a full scholarship to Georgetown College and finished fifth on the all time scoring list at Georgetown College with 1, 671 points. He was named all KIAC three years and was drafted by the Phoenix Suns. Also inducted were Bobby “Toothpick” Jones of Maysville, Tommy Corde of Mason, Bobby Jenkins of Harrison County, Tom Creamer Maysville High Coach, Eugene “Puck” Puckett Contributor 1977-96 from Paris High, and Terry Stanfield Contributor Mason.
    An Intro to Microsoft computer class will be held at Pendleton Middle School. This is an introduction to integrated applications, Explorer, word processing, database, and spreadsheets.

50 Years Ago - March, 1971

    Gas war erupts in Pendleton County, bringing prices down for motorists. One dealer received word late Monday to decrease his price to 32.3 cents a gallon for regular and 36.3 cents a gallon for ethyl.
    Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Smith of Falmouth received the tragic word that their grandson, Sp/4 John William Bruin was killed in a helicopter crash over Laos on Tuesday, February 23, 1971.
    Mrs. Don Colvin, the former Laura Studer, Pendleton County Home Demonstration Agent, passed away in Louisville, Saturday February 27. She leaves her husband and two daughters.
    The Pendleton County Wildcats won their first game of the 38th District Tournament by defeating the Augusta Panthers 99-57.
    The Pendleton County Wildcats lost their first district championship in seven years by losing to the Bracken County Polar Bears 71- 68. The Wildcats led the whole game until the last quarter where the Polar Bears outscored the Wildcats 23-17 to win.

75 Years Ago - Jan./Feb., 1946

    The Four Oaks Exchange, of which Mrs. Nora Wright is operator, is being moved this week back 50 feet from its present location, to make room for the new U.S. 27 soon to be built. The Four Oaks Telephone Co. recently held a meeting and elected Bud Hart the president. He succeeds Kenzie Browning. Elected the vice president was Carl Light; secretary Bev Watson; treasurer, John Zemper; and trustee Kenzie Browning.
    Alvin Ingles Jr. has purchased the hammermill business of Herman Ramsey of Falmouth and is now operating it.
    The 38th district basketball tournament held at Augusta last week saw all Pendleton County teams eliminated and Brooksville emerge as the victor.
    Tobacco averages for growers have been lowered 10 percent from their 1845 allotments. H. V. Pugh, chairman of the Pendleton County AAA Committee announced that many burley producers have experienced sharp drop in the prices of tobacco of some grades the past season and have expressed their favor of this reduction to prevent an accumulation of a tremendous surplus of burley, such as was seen a few years ago.
    Ryan Gillespie, aged 71 years, lifelong resident of Pendleton County, passed away Monday, March 4, 1946 at his home near Flour Creek.
    James Aulick Miles passed away Feb. 7, 1946 in Paris, Texas. He was the son of Peter W. Miles and Elizabeth Ann Wright Miles, was born April 14, 1876 and reared to manhood in Pendleton County near Falmouth.

100 Years Ago - Jan./Feb., 1921

    W. H. Rouse has sold his farm joining the Campbell Co. line to Mr. Hendricks, who will move this week.
    Mr. and Mrs. Ernest L. Barrett of Pribble’s Cross Roads are receiving congratulations over the arrival of twin daughters on February 23. The babies weighed 7 1/2 and 8 1/2 pounds respectively, and have been named Norma and Dorothy.
    Born to Mr. and Mrs. Francis Edward Kelly of Diving Ridge on February 22, a fine little daughter, name Monica. Mr. Kelly is a a World War veteran and says he is real proud of his little Red Cross nurse.
    The spirit of Mrs. A. R. Langley took its flight to that home whence no traveler e’er returns on Friday, February 15, 1921. Mrs. Langley was born near Milford on August 22, 1865 and was the daughter of J. B. and amelia Brown Morford.
    John Poe living near Caddo, Pendleton Countypassed away Saturday, February 26 and was burial was in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Lenoxburg on Monday.
