25 Years Ago - January 12, 1999

The Four Seasons Bowhunters of Northern Kentucky donated over 120 pounds of food to the Henry Hosea House just in time for the Christmas holidays.

The cost of a first class stamp increased to 33 cents effective January 10.

Several members of the Falmouth Fire Department and their wives traveled to Falmouth, MA, on December 31, 1998, to bring back three boats that have been donated to this department to assist with the starting of a water rescue team in Pendleton County.

 

50 Years Ago - January 11, 1974

Kentucky State Police raided the American Legion Hall in Falmouth Saturday night, January 5th, shortly after 8 p.m. and impounded 964 cans of beer. Leading the raid was Larry Clark, Pendleton County State Trooper, who resides on U. S. 27, Rte. 2, Butler. Accompanying him, according to a spokesperson at the Dry Ridge State Police Post, were Trooper Elmer Ray, Falmouth...

Pendleton County Schools were closed last week due to the cold, icy weather. Roads were very slick and heavy with ice. 

Many different persons have shown their concern about the new ambulance service our county has in recent discussions...There are three people on duty at all times with three others on a stand-by basis. Each ambulance run will have two attendants. There will be two persons on each run who have had first aid and ambulatory training. Also, we are set up to answer as many as three ambulance calls simultaneously.

Pete Shields of 600 Chapel Street, Falmouth, announces the opening of his new business to be known as Pete's Body shop on U.S. 27 in South Falmouth across from the Falmouth Dairy Treat.

A red and white two-engine plane crashed in a snowstorm Tuesday afternoon near the end of a private air strip on the Marvin Wolfe farm. Two men were in the plane from Marietta, Georgia when one of the engines reportedly went out. The plane came to rest on its nose and wing.

 

75 Years Ago - January 14, 1949

Falmouth Council met Monday night in its January meeting and learned that the installation of the parking meters in Falmouth would begin Monday, January 17. Duane Sorrell, chief of police, was appointed caretaker of the parking meters at a salary of $15 per month.

 Services for Pfc. Harmon T. Clingner, who was killed in action in the fighting near Leipaig, Germany on April 15, 1945, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 20, 1948, at the Immanuel Baptist Church in Covington...Private Clingner, who was 22, was a son of Mrs. Maude Clingner...and the late J. Fred Clingner, formerly of Pendleton County.

The Falmouth Red Devils were handed a six-point defeat Tuesday night when the Bracken County Polar Bears invaded the losers' court.

 

100 Years Ago - January 11, 1924

The Outlook has been furnished the following facts and figures taken from the records and contract on file at the courthouse between the State Highway Commission and the Cynthiana Construction Company, who has the contract to build the 10 miles of concrete road from Greenwood through Butler to Grant's Lick in Campbell County. ...The cost of this 10 miles of concrete road is $349,168.91. This is for all the work. Seven miles of this road are in Pendleton County, and it is on record that Pendleton will pay $112,382.50 as her part of the improvement.

Falmouth citizens sustained much damage Saturday and Sunday by their plumbing freezing up and bursting the pipes. Mrs. C. H. Kendall's range exploded, but luckily no one was injured. The plumbers had numerous distress calls Monday.

State Engineer Potts and corps of surveyors arrived in Falmouth last week and will begin the survey of the Washington Trace Road from Lenoxburg to the Campbell County line. 

The business section of Berea, Ky, was visited by a $200,000 fire Saturday night. The weather was below zero and the fire department of the city was handicapped by the blue being frozen up. The Richmond fire department was called on and made the 15 mile run in 25 minutes. The fire started in the store of Hensley, Davidson and Gilbert from an overheated stove.

The county Board of Education on Monday decided to combine three school districts, Aspen Grove, Sandsuck and Mt. Olive, and build a two-room schoolhouse at Peach Grove. 

The Licking Valley Flour Mills at Boys was destroyed by fire Sunday morning at about 2:00 o'clock.
