25 Years Ago -July 8, 1998

Hundreds of residents, along with many visitors, helped Pendleton County celebrate its 200 birthday with a huge parade and a wonderful fireworks display that evening as the grand finale and celebration ended at the Pendleton County Fairgrounds.

The streets of Falmouth were lined block-after-block with residents and visitors anxiously awaiting the bicentennial and July 4th parade.

Returning Chapel Street to a two-way street at the one-way section near the old middle school was an item discussed by Falmouth City Council at their June 30 special work session.

Meredith Mains of Falmouth is one of 92 students who will participate in the 1993 International Bands of America Concert Band.

Ryan Butts, 13, of Falmouth displayed a rare act of honesty by returning $280 he found in the Flemingsburg area over the 4th of July weekend.

 

50 Years Ago - July 6, 1973

Pendleton County Hospital Board met last Tuesday night for their final meeting of the fiscal year. The board will meet on Monday, July 9, to re-organize and elect a new chairman.

Another heavy rain storm, perhaps 4-5 inches, accompanied by lightning and thunder, struck at Pendleton County early Saturday morning. The Falmouth Fire alarm was struck and knocked off, but there was no fire call to be made. City electrician Raymond Lawson was busy Monday repairing the alarm.

A tornado-like storm struck Pendleton County around Falmouth last Wednesday afternoon, doing considerable wind damage.

Steve Houchen, representing Pendleton County Club, did well in the Kentucky State Amateur golf tournament last week at Summit Hills Country Club.

 

75 Years Ago - July 9, 1948

Both day and nighttime activities at the local playground are proceeding according to plans, and both are well-attended. A junior softball league has been formed, and boys and girls are urged to come every afternoon and take advantage of the games and the equipment available.

Henry Ward, Kentucky Commissioner of Conservation, announced Friday that a new study of the proposed Falmouth Dam has been undertaken by the U.S. Engineers Corps, Cincinnati. The engineers arrived in Falmouth last week.

 

100 Years Ago - July 6, 1923

 

A heavy wind, rain and electrical storm visited the vicinity of Foster Sunday evening, and a great deal of damage was done to growing crops and land was washed badly in places. A barn belonging to Henry Case was struck by lightning and set on fire, but the flame was extinguished with but little damage.

The new creamery being built in Butler by the Cooperative Pure Milk Association is about to be completed.
